How well do you know the plants in your nearest butterfly garden? Butterfly gardens are grown in many places in Singapore, not just in schools, to help with the conservation of local butterflies as well as plant species 🦋 Flowers found in these gardens are usually vibrant in colour to attract butterflies for pollination and serve as a potential place for reproduction! How many of these species can you identify? #Biodiversity #CityinNature #Singapore #BiodiversityConservation
In 2015, Chung Cheng High School (Main) participated in the National Butterfly Campaign organised by JGIS and @naturesocietysingapore. The Biodiversity Interest Group, led by Ms. Teo Jo Hsuan, was inspired to create a green space to attract biodiversity. Fast forward to today, the garden has expanded to three plots and is home to many insect and bird species! Not only does the butterfly garden at Chung Cheng High School bring nature closer to students and teach them about ecosystems and conservation, but it also prompts students to think about biodiversity challenges and coexistence. If your school is interested in creating your own butterfly garden, contact us via DM or email at [email protected]. By taking small actions like planting a sapling, you can make a huge difference to the environment. Let's work together to bring nature closer to our communities and promote conservation for generations to come. 🌱🦋🌺
Can you spot the difference? Our amazing monkey guards help make food inaccessible to monkeys by manually securing trash bins in areas where macaques are known to frequent. This is important to prevent them from consuming food waste and to stop them from coming into residential areas for more! In some residential areas close to nature spaces, there are bungee cords or metal clasps on the bins to make it easier for residents to lock them securely. We can all do our part to promote coexistence between wildlife and humans by remembering to close and secure trash bins after use and cleaning up our unwanted trash. If you're interested in joining our monkey family (pun intended), feel free to drop us a message!🙈 #longtailedmacaque #cityinnature #wildlife
Let's talk about animal cruelty content on social media. A recent BBC investigation uncovered a global monkey torture ring where hundreds of thousands of individuals worldwide are engaging in macaque torture videos on Youtube and Tiktok, with some paying for more extreme content. These videos mostly come from Indonesia. The long-tailed macaques are often captured as a result of human-wildlife conflicts. While some of the monkeys are subsequently sold to laboratories around the world, others end up in the hands of these psychopaths. This is why it is extremely important to advocate for human-wildlife co-existence as these torture videos and engagement are a result of negative attitudes towards wildlife and biophobia. Animals can also experience pain, fear, and suffering just like us. When you come across animal cruelty content on social media, DO NOT ENGAGE. REPORT. By refusing to participate or support such content, we can collectively take a stand against animal cruelty. Full article by BBC. Cover image taken by Amos Chua. Happy #WorldOceanDay 2023! Recently, world leaders made a global commitment to protect 30% of our blue planet by 2030 (30x30). To create a healthy ocean with abundant wildlife and to stabilise the climate, it’s critical that 30% of our planet’s lands, waters, and ocean are protected. By supporting 30×30, we can protect our planet’s life support systems – specifically the interconnected issues of ocean, climate, and biodiversity. Currently, less than 17% of land and 8% of the ocean worldwide is protected. Let’s show and grow support for the movement to protect at least 30% of our blue planet by 2030. Together we can turn the tide, curb the climate crisis and protect biodiversity worldwide. [WorldOceanDay.org/30x30](http://worldoceanday.org/30x30) #Protect30x30 #30x30 #OceanClimateAction
Happy World Environment Day! This year's theme is "Beat Plastic Pollution", aimed at raising awareness about the increasing rate of plastic in our oceans and food, which poses a threat to marine and land animals, including primates. On this World Environment Day, let's celebrate the beauty of our planet and raise awareness about the devastating impact of plastic on our animals and climate. We believe that everyone can make a difference, no matter how small, and we all have a role to play in protecting our beautiful Earth. Remember to say "No" to plastic whenever possible! We had such an amazing time at the Festival of Biodiversity this past weekend! It was so heartening to see so many people from different walks of life come together to celebrate our planet and all its beautiful creatures. We're thrilled that we got to meet so many new faces and share our love for animals with everyone who visited our booth. Special thanks to the SOTA students who designed our wildlife infographics and our amazing crew for running the booth - we couldn't have done it without you! Let's continue to make conscious choices every day that contribute to a greener future and protect the biodiversity that sustains us all 🌎
Over the weekend, our team visited @rootsandshootsmy to celebrate the launch of their latest book, documentary, and exhibition "Wang Kelian, Perlis - The Forgotten Valley", which honours the beautiful and incredible biodiversity in the northernmost state in Peninsular Malaysia. The event was also graced by Permangku Raja Perlis and Raja Puan Muda Perlis! We're so honoured to be a part of this and for the release of the upcoming projects 🐒
