Congratulations to our finalist in the Textile Arts Open category INGE TIEMENS @inge.tmns from The Netherlands. She graduated from the Amsterdam Fashion Institute in June 2019 where she focused on keeping artisanal embroidery techniques alive. Unusual materials form the basis of her work. For Inge, embroidery is an escape from contemporary society in which unrest plays a major role. Her goal is to allow the viewer to step out of reality for a while, but at the same time to give a message. The hours of manual work and references to historical crafts makes the work personal and gives it a soul. Her artwork is called 'Modern Duality' and describes her inspiration as "In our today’s society, a lot of people are under pressure from an abundance of digital information. Congratulations to our finalist in Fashion Student category YING HAN SERINA LEE @leeserinalee from Singapore. She is a textile and fashion designer and is currently a final-year student at Lasalle College completing her Bachelors in Art: Fashion Design and Textile (Goldsmith certificate), majoring in textiles. With an art background of 15 years in Chinese Painting and calligraphy, her works combine these various disciplines. In terms of textiles, she specialises in printmaking and embroidery. Her artwork is called 'Vscent II' and describes her inspiration as "Vscent II is a collection inspired by character outfits for online avatars. She is a conceptual designer who’s fascination lies in reusing, restoring, repairing, and reclaiming, to find new meaning and purpose to spaces, objects and materials found in our everyday lives. Rather than erasing history to make way for new, it is necessary to embrace the power of narration and storytelling to guide the revival of matter to intertwine the past, present, and future. Her arwork is called 'Ctrl+Alt+Recover' and describes her inspirattion as "This project highlights the dangers of our disposable attitudes and interactions we experience in the digital world as a reflection of how we behave in our physical world. It is time to stop and reset our automated action of ‘Ctrl+Alt+Delete’ and strive towards ‘Ctrl+Alt+Recover’. Looking to the future, it is imperative to think how and why we should appreciate the value of time and age that is encapsulated in an object. The abandoned chair was recovered using a pile of damaged garments destined for landfill by reclaiming synthetic yarns through the unravelling of knitted garments and braided to strengthen the material. Her artwork is called 'Glitch' and she describes her inspiration as - "Approaching the theme of digital doppelgangers I pulled from my experience as a digital artist who craves physical work as well as my experiences of both connection and isolation during the pandemic. My inspiration was to create a physical glitch effect obscuring the face as I wanted to reference the correlation between the pandemic and a glitch; the latter definition being "sudden usually temporary malfunction or irregularity." Congratulations to our finalist in Fashion Open category JINJOO CHO @salle_de_joo from the USA. She majored in fashion design at FIT, New York. During school, I interned with this company doing a lot of hand embroidery for the season and fell in love with it. Her final artwork for the prize is called 'Janus' (Jacket/pants) and describes her artwork as "As I was researching for the prize, I was intrigued by Janus' idea of having 2 opposite sides on one body. But it was hard to materialize the idea, so I moved to digital arts. Images I found were patterned and static, which was quite opposite to Janus images that were wild, and rough. And there, I realize that these two opposite elements can be very interesting together, and it is the Janus; chaos and order theory. I was looking for 2 elements I’ve been practicing that conflict with each other but still would look interesting together. Congratulations to our finalist in our Textile Art Student category SUZANNE AGER @ager.suzanne from the U.K. She is a recent Textile Design [BA Hons] graduate from Nottingham Trent University, where she specialised in embroidery. Inspired by the textures and forms of the natural world I like to take an illustrative approach to stitching.
