📣 ANNOUNCEMENT 📣 We are very excited to announce our vision for a new, purpose-built Visitor Centre AND to launch our new website! Our vision is to provide a first class experience for the many thousands of visitors who come to Dunnottar each year. The design of the building incorporates space for interpretation, toilets, a café and a shop which we hope will enhance the enjoyment of all those coming to see the iconic ruined fortress. A Proposal of Application Notice (PoAN) has been submitted to Aberdeenshire Council, which commences a 12-week consultation on the proposals. These little guys are baby swallows! Their nest was down by the entrance to the Castle, so they are quite friendly. Now that they’ve left the nest they like to sit around the cistern sunning themselves in the morning while mum and dad bring them food. Secrets of Dunnottar - Dunnottar Castle's William Wallace connection often leads to questions about the movie 'Braveheart' - while we have no connection to that film, there is a Mel Gibson connection as he starred as Hamlet in Franco Zeffirelli's 1990 production alongside Glenn Close, Helena Bonham Carter and Ian Holm. Dunnottar was featured as Elsinor Castle in several external shots and the graveyard scene was filmed at the base of the rock in the pre-fence days. Marks of gravestones could still be seen on the grass for some time after filming. The path leading to what are now the entrance steps to the Castle can also be seen in these pictures. As CGI technology was limited they built up the set in real life, as seen in the last photos where the Castle appears more intact. We hope you’ve enjoyed this ‘secret’ of Dunnottar! Secrets of Dunnottar - This old plaque dates from the late 1500s to early 1600s. It is written in Old Scots and roughly says “Thay have said quat say thay, let them say” meaning roughly “Let them talk”. It is unknown where this saying comes from. The Keith family mottos are Veritas Vincit - Truth Conquers and Hazard yit Forvard - translated to “Through adversity we will move forward”. This plaque is easily missed as it can only be seen looking through certain windows at just the right angle.
