Today is Dramatic Need’s last ever day of programming. It is a bittersweet moment for all of us, bitter of course because no one could have predicted what 2020 could bring, how it would force so many great businesses, charities & families to their knees. Bitter too because we were so proud of what our programming was achieving, the changes we were seeing in our students’ lives over the 14 years we worked here & being forced to close now is heartbreaking for all of us. But it is also sweet, as seeing what our students have achieved, how creative and confident they have become, how brave and resilient they have been. So, to our students: we are so proud of you, thank you for being the heart & soul of everything Dramatic Need was. Tswelang pele ka mosebetsi motle ❤️. #dramaticneed

This has been an emotional last week of programming for us here the Dramatic Need Arts Centre in Rammulotsi. On Monday we asked the students what they would like to make/create during their last week at the centre. These are the works the students chose to create in memory of their time spent at Dramatic Need. We feel incredibly proud and moved by these phenomenal gestures of appreciation💛 Kea Leboha. #dramaticneed #artseducation #communityarts #creativechange #youngpeople #southafrica

15. Create your own interpretation of a famous work of art. How would you have painted the Mona Lisa? Using a famous work as your inspiration, create your own work. It could help reveal more about your lens on the world. *https://intuitivecreativity.typepad.com/expressiveartinspirations/100-art-therapy-exercises.html #shellyklammer #arttherapy #expressiveart #artseducation #onlinelearning #creativechange

Last week our students created fear masks. In this lesson we discussed what the term fear means to each of them, what situations made them feel fearful and if they found themselves putting on a mask in order to emotionally protect themselves. During the exercise the students were invited to create a fear mask by painting their image on the outside and what they feared on the inside of the mask. The students could then share their fears or keep them private. This process helps our young people to express and visualise their feelings in a safe and supportive environment. Look how wonderful they all are! ✨ #artseducation #expressivearts #fearmask #youngpeople #emotionalhealth #mask

Lesson 90: COVID-19 Conjuring the Image - Ink Portraits Materials: six pieces of thick paper, brushes, ink and water Duration: 1 hour Instructions: Marlene Dumas ink drawings come to life on the page. Her process is determined by the image she is trying to conjure through the manipulation of ink and water on the surface of the paper. Working quickly by physically moving the paper and ink on the surface with brushes, paper towel, her fingers and whatever is available to her the image is brought to life. Today in borrowing Dumas process/technique of creating a ink drawing, create six portraits of the same thing. This could be a portrait of an animal, a person or an object. Let the process and medium determine the image, go with it, work quickly and adapt in the moment allowing the image to surface. At the end you will have six very different or similar portraits. With practice you will become comfortable in letting the medium dictate the image but this will take time so keep going! INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR THE ELIMINATION OF VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN. Every year this day reminds us that so many of our sisters, mothers and daughters live in fear. This is a reality that can’t be normalised, forgotten, or looked away from. We need to talk about gender based violence, in our homes, in our schools, amongst our friends and at the workplace. We need to listen and support the voices that desperately need to be heard and their stories that need to shared. And it is our responsibility as a community to teach our young people about consent and the rights of women, children and the LGBTQI community. Let’s spread the word! #GenerationEquality #orangetheworld #16days #spreadtheword
