"After I release I face many problems with my relatives and my friends," says Ishmel who was tortured and imprisoned for one month because he is gay. But the greatest emotional blow was delivered by his family on his release: "My parents sent me away from there and said they don't give me shelter again. They abandon me. Some of my relatives yet are not talking to me. Some they even said I am not their brother... I need my parents to give me back the love they showed to me when I was a small boy because I can't live without them... I need their love back." // Ishmel shared their story with the #WhereLoveIsIllegal campaign, a platform for #LGBTQI+ stories of #discrimination and #survival. “We are human, you are human. I am merely a mirror of everything you and a human can be. Do not let that anger you, let that free, heal and Inspire you to live authentically as you,” says Cris, a nonbinary, trans masc, queer person from New Jersey. “Imagine each time going into a rest/locker room not knowing how others will react to you. It’s a lot emotionally and physically when you are just trying to exist.” When he was laughed at, he did not tolerate the ridicule, “I firmly advocated for myself, my community and put that person in their place.” He advises people to check on their trans friends during these hard times. “To my siblings, let’s continue to exist like we always have and always will. We deserve love and space like everyone else! We are enough. We are key that the world needs to heal and grow.” // Cris (@cris__x3 ) shared their story with the #WhereLoveIsIllegal campaign, a platform for #LGBTQI+ stories of #discrimination and #survival. "If a person misgenders me, they aren't seeing me, and that's irritating. I don't like to not be seen. I don't like assumptions to be made about me based on what somebody thinks my genitals are. Spirit is a pansexual, transgender, gender expansive person from New Orleans, USA. Spirit sees their journey as still changing, and they have a different relationship to their gender identity or sexual orientation based on their lived experiences. "The first time I bought 'man shoes' I was terrified to wear them, I think they're the light blue bowling shoes I have; the first time someone asked me what my pronouns were, I think it might have been @ a BreakOUT! event. I'm trying to recall how I got to Spirit & the first time I referred to myself as Spirit & asked others to do the same; this journey is a constant exploration and uncovering." // Spirit shared their story with the #WhereLoveIsIllegal campaign, a platform for #LGBTQI+ stories of #discrimination and #survival.
