The Crybaby tour starts in two weeks. Flights are booked, the band is rehearsing, WE HAVE OUTFITS!!! We’ll be crisscrossing the continent all spring/summer/fall so if you haven’t done it yet – go check out the tour page (link in bio) to see if we’re coming to a city near you.  It’s going to be fun! PLUS we’re offering VIP at certain headline stops where you can hear us play some tunes, a lil Q&A AND priority entrance to the venue.    The goal with Crybaby (the album) was to really enjoy being on stage; to get in front of an audience and feel uninhibited, and loose, to have fun, and play like a band again.  The second-best part of being in a band (the best is being on stage), is sharing the stage with amazing bands. We have some incredible bands heading out on tour with us this year, plus we’re playing tons of amazing festivals with exciting line ups.  We can’t wait.     Hope we see you out there.   PS We just added dates in Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver!

Hey y’all, we’re so excited that Junior High is finally out. Sara and I collaborated on this graphic novel  with @tilliewalden and we couldn’t be more excited to release this silly, funny, emotionally messy, rollercoaster into the world.  Buy it for someone you love, buy it for yourself, buy it for your best friend from Junior High, buy it for your worst bully in Junior High. Then go to our store and buy a Junior High t-shirt! Proceeds go to @teganandsarafoundation   Thanks to the absurdly kind, creative, wonderfully talented team that surrounds us who made this happy.  Marc for getting this deal in there, Wes, Melissa, Hannah and the entire publicity team for being such rockstars.  To Tillie, thank goodness you said yes.   We just adore you and are forever in your debts.  Can’t wait to see  book two! Thank you for getting us (as twins and queers), for your thoughtful suggestions, and vision and compassion.    Thanks to our impossibly patient and caring family and brilliant, kind friends for reading, editing, and making suggestions on early drafts. And letting us still hang out with you all these years later and after we have continued to write about you against your will.    And lastly, thanks to everyone we ever met in Junior High.  The good, the bad and the not so great.  It’s a rough age. We were certainly far from perfect.  We both still cringe over the things we didn’t say, should have said, the hair styles...oh the hairstyles. I’ll never truly escape my horrible acne, my dexter holland hair, and the shadow of not always standing up for the good ones.  But I like to think Sara and I figured out a lot about ourselves during those years in Junior High and that it made us the people we are today.    Enjoy T&S

We did an "Evening with" show the other night, with four of us on stage: no computers, tracks, or drums. It was two hours of songs and stories, and it was really fun. For many years, we pushed for a full band and bigger production, aiming to play larger venues, travel the world, and have new experiences. It was thrilling. We performed on some of the biggest stages, stood in front of more people than we could comprehend, and it felt amazing to be surrounded by a band, and supported by a crew as we built a bigger show. This came after years of folk festivals and solo performances, touring the world with just the two of us. However, lately, the desire to strip things back has returned. So we booked a special show in Washington DC with a different kind of performance in mind. I won't say it was easy because we are currently in full band, big production, festival mode. There may have been a bit of stress attached to this one-off event, and for that, I apologize to the team. But truth be told, it was fun. REALLY FUN. Every now and then, we remove all the frills and just stand there, playing songs and telling stories. In those moments, I am reminded that the connection we seek from the audience, from each other, and from the music is always there. It doesn't matter how many lights, band members, guitars, or audience members there are. There is something truly special about standing on stage with a guitar in hand, singing our hearts out. I want to express my gratitude to the DC audience for always being spectacular and one-of-a-kind. @grantzubritsky and @kirksphoto thank you for putting together a two-hour set of music with us ON THE DAY OF THE SHOW! You're heroes. And to our amazing, hardworking team, thank you as always for giving us your best tirelessly! I cannot WAIT for next year and all the acoustic shows we are going to play. We are getting close to announcing the first leg, and we are excited. Are you excited? We definitely are! 📸 @themauricio

It’s actually always such a pleasure to play home shows. Eight minutes after we finished this show I was home taking my dog out for a walk. Shout out to the reactive dogs and their owners watching this. I’m getting over my anxiety related to Georgia’s reactivity. But seriously. If you see us out and about don’t say the word “hi” it really does set her off. Just smile and wave. At me! She also doesn’t like eye contact. Or quick movements. Or head pets. Or safety vests. Or shuffling feet. So just a quick smile and a casual wave and then keep it moving. 🐕 🌊 Video captured in Vancouver on Canada day by the lovely @lindseyblane 💛

I wrote, My Number, in the bathroom. Sara and I were sharing a basement suite in my mom’s house, paying $300/month rent (I’m pretty sure we never paid my mom), and the tiny bathroom had a hollow raised floor that made the most delightful thumping noise when you tapped your feet on it. I’d prop the shower door open and sit on the toilet with my guitar in my lap, banging my feet along with whatever I was playing. The acoustics were to die for.   Life then was weird. Our parents had split up, my secret girlfriend had moved to England, I’d shaved my head, and postponed college for a year. I wanted to play music, but instead, I was serving coffee in the mornings at Grabajabba, then sending out packages with Sara and my demo tape in the afternoons to every manager, festival, label, and coffee shop I could find an address for on the internet (dial-up). I felt stuck, left behind in a way.   It’s not fun to admit this, but I barely remember what I wrote the song about.  Over time, the song, like a lot of songs, just took on a feeling. And the feeling then was one of loss, so it felt sad to revisit. I felt at odds with everyone and everything at eighteen, and most of all with myself. I was hoping someone would save me, even though I was singing about saving someone.   We hadn’t played the song live in nearly 20 years, but we reworked it for a soon-to-be-released project (announcement coming soon), and we have been playing it live again. And I can’t deny it’s felt great to bring it back. The song has transformed again, becoming something entirely new, and I’ve really enjoyed having it back on the setlist. It’s still about loss, but a different kind.   We’re planning on doing more of this when we tour acoustic next year. I wonder what else we’ll reinvent, bring back, or restore and how it will make us feel.  What other songs do you hope we do this with? Video by @lindseyblane Ps the baby crying in perfect time to the song is magic. #crybaby

Me and my fuzzy anxious beast wish you all a nice July 4th.   Sara and I are off to Washington, DC tomorrow for an acoustic show Thursday.  Then we head back up to Canada for a week of festivals (Orillia, Ottawa, Calgary and PEI). Pray to the luggage/flight gods for us. I’m excited.     Sara and I have been talking a lot about next year.  What we’re going to do.  How we’re going to tour.  What kind of show we want to put on. What’s satisfying us most right now.  What’s something new and fresh that we can look forward to on stage.   We’ve decided we want to do a lot of acoustic touring.  Stripped down.  A mix of old and new songs. And stories. Lots of stories.  We want to be lighter on stage.  Less weighed down by production.  By structure.  By the pressure of building and climbing and stretching and reinventing.  Who knows what that will look like, or how we’ll do it, but it feels nice to be reconnecting to our roots.  It’s a return to the way it all started.  Songs, melodies, stories.   What do you think we should do? What kind of show would you like to see us play?   Big bombastic pop madness. Acoustic storytelling melody mash. Indie rock emo club night.   Order up what your heart desires.

I vividly remember the first photo shoot for our band where clothes were provided. We were 18, and they put us in dresses. I was self-conscious about my chest, and body then. Standing against a propeller plane in the cream dress, my hair cut short, and wearing aviator sunglasses, I felt completely exposed. After my friends and family assured me, I looked good. I felt embarrassed.     In the early part of our career, we often wore our own clothes at photoshoots, but as we got more popular, and the opportunities to be photographed increased, clothes were often provided. Thus began a long, quiet battle to control how we looked. More often than I care to remember, we would lose the battle with the stylist, photographer, or editors on set and end up in clothes we wouldn't dare wear in the real world, but now would be seen by the whole world.  It was exhausting negotiating our boundaries around the world, at such a young age, often with only strangers surrounding us.  Once Elle Girl tried to put us in swimsuits!   Last night, I got home to Vancouver. We're here to play a free show on Canada Day at Canada Place (we hit the stage at 4:55 pm). So, I searched "Tegan and Sara Canada Day," and this photo came up. I won't pretend I remember much about the shoot or even what the photo was for. But those aren't our clothes. The pantyhose, leather boots and skirt I'm wearing were probably the first I'd ever worn. Beside me, Sara looks totally put together, her outfit is inoffensive, cute even. We're not exposing our chests; we weren't forced to show cleavage or appear sexual. We're waving Canadian flags! But I can read the discomfort on our faces. I know we would have preferred to be in pants, in more masculine fits.   As kids, my mom had to pay us to wear dresses. We’ve gone decade-long stretches without wearing a dress since.  But Sara wore a skirt on stage the other day, and one to the Oscars a few years ago. I suppose in both cases, someone was still paying her. LOL!  I imagine we won’t be in skirts for our show in Vancouver Saturday, but who knows! Come down and find out!   Did anyone else get forced into dress clothes for yearly family photos? If so, what was the worst?

Sara sent me this video the night before Sid was born. I think it’s good that they took so much time to rehearse his arrival. It’s no shock that Sara and her partner Stacy have been amazing parents this first year. And it’s been really fun being an aunt! Not to make it about me, but it’s also really lovely that we still get to be in a band and make music and travel and do all the things we love to do but it’s all balanced with what I think probably is most important in life which is new experiences, expanding your family, building a fuller life, and taking care of things. Happy one year birthday Sid. 🌞🥑✈️🥳
