“Maria Clara at Ibarra” breakout star David Licauco (@davidlicauco), seen on billboards and phone wallpapers, has officially achieved (the grand but fleeting) Internet Boyfriend status. Will this be his final form? In our latest digital cover, the actor reveals his takeaway from Fidel, an acting-slash-life principle, the “Itaewon Class” character he resonates with, his *important* phone wallpaper, and things he believes in (hint: it’s not magic). It’s prime time for the 28-year-old actor and he is laser focused on the long run. Head to our link in bio to decode everyone’s parasocial relationship with David. #DavidForScout Cover Story by Jelou Galang (@jelou.galang) Photography by Shaira Luna (@shairaluna) Creative direction by Nimu Muallam (@nimu_muallam) Art direction by Yel Sayo (@yelzus) Hair and makeup by Nathan Ferolino (@nathan_ferolino) Styling by David Milan (@mrdavidmilan) Photography assistant Albert Calaguas (@albert.calaguas1) Produced by Jelou Galang Co-produced by Kleo Catienza (@kleomarjoreen), Justine Rey (@readme.juju), and Eric Salta (@ericatlass) Special thanks to Kay Aranas (@_apieceofkayek) and Pocholo the dog

POV: A time machine went chaotic, so “Maria Clara at Ibarra’s” Fidel is transported to the 21st century… figuring out what Twitter is. In this video, we challenge our cover star David Licauco (@davidlicauco) to answer random fan tweets not as himself, but as his iconic prime time character. Will he successfully channel Fidel’s quirks? Will this fill in our “MCI” hangover? Take it away, (temporary user) @/HindiToSiFidel 👨‍💻 #DavidForScout Video by @mikeyyabut

“Lahat naman tayo, minsan nakakalimutan nating bigyan ng importansya kung sino talagang core group mo, kasi siyempre with all the things that happen in our lives. So, sometimes you have to be aware na, ‘you’re still David na anak ng parents mo, [and] a brother.’” “Unreal” David Licauco (@davidlicauco) is one of the realest ones out there. Beyond his unassuming charm are his strengths of being authentic and grounded in this fast-paced chapter of his life. In our cover story, we chronicle David’s IRL testament to his dedication to fans, and talk to him about his role in friend circles, relationship with fame, and more. A lot of us weren’t born during the height of martial law. Correct. But this doesn’t mean we can get away with ignorance. Besides reading well-researched books and articles, consuming creative media—especially those grounded in true events—can provide an insightful glimpse into our nation’s past. Case in point: “Liway” by Kip Oebanda, a film based on the director’s experiences as a child of political detainees. But that’s just one piece of the puzzle. Philippine cinema has also given us gems that, albeit fictional, vividly depict the socio-political landscape of that era: “Katips” by Vince Tañada, “Dekada ’70” by Chito Roño (with a screenplay by Lualhati Bautista), and “Mula sa Kung Ano ang Noon” by Lav Diaz, to name a few. These cinematic pieces prove that history isn’t just a collection of dates and facts. It’s a living, breathing narrative of the struggles and sacrifices of our people—and reflecting on them (whether or not we were directly affected) is an essential duty we owe to the victims, survivors, and generations that follow. (P.S. Dir. Kip Oebanda is set to make a directorial comeback in 2024 with “Balota,” a Cinemalaya entry based on the “absurd” electoral process in the Philippines. More info at the link in bio.) 📸: (1) “Liway” (2018) (2) “Katips” (2022) (3) “Dekada ’70” (2002) (4) “Mula sa Kung Ano ang Noon” (2014)

Let’s be real: Samantha Lee (@givemesam) is one of those few local filmmakers who can quench our thirst for authentic sapphic representation. And while we all have our personal picks when it comes to the characters she has written so far, have you ever wondered who the filmmaker would choose if she had to play favorites? 👀 We took it upon ourselves to ask Samantha her top three self-written characters—and she even went the extra mile in giving us some TMIs while she was writing them. 🎨: @agnesdaniella 📸: @givemesam/IG
