I originally started here as a business major. I imagined opening a coffee shop with some art. Then I changed to psychology with an art minor, thinking I wanted to do art therapy. I didn't think Longwood was my place anymore, and I was about to transfer to VCU when I found the communications studies major. Communication studies gave me a sense of family and belonging. My mom reminded me of my passion for doing this kind of work when I was younger, which I had strayed from, and finding the comm major allowed me to rediscover my passion. In the major, I met people who saw things the same way I did, which hadn't happened before. As a comm major, I've found ways to grow my skill set, my muse, my passion, and what I want to do with my voice. Comm is such a special major because it feels like you're at a family dinner table in every class. Every professor is either like a mom, uncle, grandpa, or weird brother or something. What I love about the "COMMunity" is that we can all be ourselves, love each other, and love what we get to do together. The communication studies department has a full news studio, a fantastic opportunity that is entirely unique. I know we've had students from other schools come and ask if they can use our studio because they don't have that equipment. It makes me feel really lucky to go to a school with the opportunities we have here, both equipment-wise and experience-wise. Some projects have taken me outside the Longwood community, such as working with The Dunnington Mansion on Poplar Hill people and understanding that family and its history. I also have done stories on the Bland Reid Funeral Home, one of Farmville's oldest black-owned businesses. Connecting with the local history is something I encourage all students to get involved in. Did you know Taylor Swift had a Lancer era? Taylor once rocked our campus, and now she's taking stadiums by storm. 🎤 Longwood Rotunda editor Anthony Anderson '24 recently contacted Taylor's publicist, Tree Paine, and scored press floor seats for Tyler Bagent '26 and McKenzie Rigney '22 to write a review of the Eras tour concert.
