Yesterday – 1st of April – marked the first day of our #LewaEarthDayChallenge, 22 days of advocating for #biodiversity and #ecosystems, that will culminate to #EarthDay on April 22nd. ____ This year’s Earth Day theme is ‘Invest in our Planet’ – which is a call to all – from individuals, to communities, private and public organsisations – to put resources into conservation models and green innovations that will restore our planet while sustaining livelihoods. ____ This call encapsulates Lewa’s mission and vision. Restoring endangered species and protecting existing biodiversity. Managing natural resources (water, forests, soil etc.) and maintaining ecosystem integrity and connectivity. Investing in livelihood programmes (education, health, sustainable agriculture, small enterprise etc.) so that people who live and depend on these habitats can also thrive. ____ The radical truth is that the planet is in dire need of biodiversity and ecological restoration. But we possess equal measures of radical optimism and radical solutions to deliver a future that where all of life thrives on the planet. _____ In this 22-Day #EarthDay Challenge, we are aiming to raise $50,000 to #investintheplanet. Next on the Lewa-Aqua-Life series is the Barbus fish - name based on the fact that most members of the genus (Barbus) have a pair of barbels on their mouths, which they use to prey for food in murky water. _________ Barbs are excellent (and aggressive) hunters. Along with eating algae, they go after smaller fish, worms, and crustaceans. _________ At least one species (Barbsus Microbarbis from Rwanda) is known to have gone extinct in recent times. The exact status of others is yet to be confirmed. _________ Most of this latter population largely inhabit Lake Victoria, one of the Great African Lakes, but their population is thought to have been massively destabilised, perhaps decimated, following the introduction of the Nile Perch to the lake. _________ It is difficult to judge the species' overall status with certainty due to deficient data on distribution and population - more reason why such monitoring exercises by the Lewa Research team are vital for overall aqua-fauna conservation. _________ #aquafauna #aqualife #research #monitoring #conservationscience #rivers #wetlands #ecosystems #balance #species #life

The African Clawed Frog (native to East, South and parts of West Africa) is one of the aquatic species found in Lewa. ______ Who thinks about Lewa or any Savanna Grassland for that matter, and thinks about aquatic life? ______ However, running through the Lewa landscape is a stretch of swamp and rivers/streams; a wetland and water system teeming with biodiversity. ______ Of all ecosystems, wetlands are the most biologically diverse - with microbes, turtles, snakes, plants etc. A healthy energy exchange between these organisms contributes and impacts overall ecological balance. ______ This image was taken during a survey by the Lewa Research Department monitoring species' in Lewa waters. Species status and population are key markers of an ecosystem's health. (PS. after a quick body scan and camera click, we returned this little guy to his waters.) ______ The African clawed frog spends all of their time in stagnant water where they live, feed and reproduce. #interstingfact: Despite their lack of vocal cords, males can vocalize to attract females. Girls' Talk. _______ Lewa's Senior Nurse, Phoebe Wafula, gives a talk on #reproductivehealth to students in the Lewa Education Programme (LEP). ________ The LEP Mentorship Programme will run for a week; targeting both male and female students in all highschool streams. _______ Topics will be centered on wellness, personal development, self-esteem, health, hygiene, relationships, performance, careers. _______ "The special thing about this is that LEP alumni will be sharing their experiences with the current cohort, which will elicit constructive engagement."
