One year ago today, I made the decision to take a step back from professional bike racing. 💓⭐️☺️ It was a very tough decision but I don’t regret it for a minute. I am so grateful for every minute of my career - the highs and the lows. But I have loved the “after”, too. Just over a year ago, I began taking SSRI’s*. I was desperately looking for help out of a depressive episode surrounding my unexpected retirement from pro cycling. • I began anti-depressants expecting them to, well, help with my depression. I never could have imagined the freedom they would grant me from my lifelong struggle with anxiety and ocd. When I coupled therapy and medication together, I felt a glimmer of calm in my otherwise chaotic mind for the first time in my whole life. This week marks 3 years for me and Adin ❤️ loving him has always felt so easy. But there was a time, at the very beginning of our relationship, where I worried about giving my heart to a 22 year old. Was he too young for this commitment? Would we outgrow each other? With all my anxiety, I never predicted all the joy in store for us! 3 years later, I feel so blessed to have watched Adin grow into the person he is today. It’s so beautiful to get to “grow up” with someone. We’ve grown together. We’ve grown individually. And we’ve grown in ways I never could’ve imagined! ⛵️🚲🐾 This weekend I got to watch him launch @acorntoarabella, an absolutely magnificent project, comprised of many amazing people. It was an honor to witness this project come to life and hit the water. If you told me 3 years ago that ✨ I would be retired from pro bike racing ✨ my mentee @clairesteciuk became my best friend ✨ I’d be at peace enough with my body to swim in my underwear AND ✨ mentally stable enough to face my biggest fear of swimming in a lake (!!!) As a recovering perfectionist, something I’ve really struggled with in my MTB progression, is letting go of perfection when doing big drops, jumps, etc. When I hit this drop for the first time, I basically thought I “almost crashed” and it was “so sketchy.” Rewatching the video it was totally fine! Raced my first dual slalom race on Friday ✅ thanks to the @umassamherst_cycling team for putting it on. Such an awesome race and super sick course!
