Happy #Pride. I used to avoid saying those words for a long time because happy pride was not a phrase that I associated with growing up in Louisiana, but I am very proud to be a gay man today and I wanna say something about that. When I was growing up, no one ever read a children's book to me about a gay couple, no one ever took me to the drag queen story book reading at the local library. I never saw a pride flag. No one ever bought me a pride shirt that I could wear at the local target. They didn't have a gay history class at my Catholic high school. But guess what? I still wound up gay and I'm deeply proud to be gay. You know why? Because it is who I am and it is who I was put on this earth to be. And when I tell you there's absolutely nothing wrong with it, I say it as something I know for sure because why would God make me this way? God makes no mistakes. Right? What I do wish is that I would've seen a pride flag at the target. I wish somebody would've read a children's book to me about a gay couple. It wouldn't have made me gay, but it would've helped me to understand that there are other gay people like me in the world. And that would've helped little ole me way back when. So again, happy pride.

Speech is where I found my voice and gained a foundation that formed the man I am today. Grateful.

Shane Co. Jewlery Apologizes To Puerto Rican Man/U.S. Servicemember For Denying Him An Engagement Ring Because A Company Employee Didn't Accept His Puerto Rico Driver's License As Valid U.S. ID Shane Co asked for a drivers license b/c Gonzalez wanted to finance the ring using a Shane Co credit card. Shane Co. founder Rordan Shane offered his “sincerest apology” to United States servicemember Abdiel Gonzalez, (who hails from Puerto Rico) who recently tried to purchase an engagement ring in California where he is now stationed for the U.S. Army. Gonzalez says an employee at the Shane Co. store in Roseville, California didn’t accept his Puerto Rico driver’s license when he walked into the store to purchase the ring that he says he fell in love with and seemed just right for his soon to be wife. When the employee didn’t accept his licesne, Gonzalez says he then showed his military ID to back up the fact that as Puerto Rican he is a U.S. citizen, but the employee, Gonzalez says, didn’t not accept either ID as valid. “I felt discriminated and treated like I was a lie,” Gonzalez told me. Gonzalez later the bought the ring online. There he wasn’t asked for a drivers license. He wrote a message to Shane Co through their Facebook account but never heard back. I called Shane Co. The response was swift: “We are deeply sorry for his experience and are making every possible effort to ensure that it never happens again. This is not reflective of our brand values and was not done with malicious intent. We have investigated the matter and assessed that we need to improve our employee training with respect to this particular detail. To ensure this does not happen again, our team is actively planning special training so that others may learn from this occasion…Shane Co. takes the experience of its customers very seriously. This does not reflect our core values or our high standards for customer experience. Rordan Shane, CEO & President, will be reaching out to Mr. Gonzalez to personally offer his apologies. Mr. Shane would like to offer Mr. Gonzalez and his wife a store gift certificate for $1000 and a donation of the same amount to a charity of Mr. Gonzalez’s choice.”
