The august English writer and critic Samuel Johnson once opined, “The two most engaging powers of an author are to make new things familiar and familiar things new.” Johnson’s maxim finds eloquent expression in the captivating Connecticut home of Jane Keltner de Valle (@janekeltnerdev), cofounder of children’s skin care line @paloroma (and AD’s former style director), and her husband, #AD100 designer Giancarlo Valle (@studiogiancarlovalle). Together, the dynamic couple have conjured a vision of classic New England charm animated by a wholly contemporary spirit—a marriage of the familiar and the novel that speaks to their professional pedigrees, their personal passions, and the spirit of their young family. On an unassuming street, tucked in one of Los Angeles’s many canyons, sits a hidden tree house. And somewhat surprisingly, it’s owned by a cowboy who just so happens to be a consummate host. But to country music star @orvillepeck, it’s just home. “To be honest, I never thought I’d be able to own a house,” says the artist, known for his soulful voice and eye-catching masks. “But when I saw this [place], it felt absolutely perfect.” Peek inside the singer's cozy retreat at the link in our bio. Minimal furnishings don’t necessarily portend minimalist design. In this Austin, Texas home designed by #ADPRODirectory interior designer Liz MacPhail (@lizmacphailinteriors), the pieces may be fiercely edited, but they nevertheless convey maximum style, thanks in part to a sensual color palette of rust, emerald, and their variations. Lined in @heathceramics Morning Dew field tiles and anchored by an Avalon 62 freestanding soaking tub by @nativetrails, the primary bath’s celadon aura is also punctuated by the leafy plantings in the adjacent atrium shower. We gave interior designers Laura Hodges (@laurahodgesstudio), @patrickmele, and Xavier Donnelly (@funwindow) a photo of the same empty NYC café—then asked each of them to transform the space in their particular style, however they pleased with no restrictions. Three artists, one canvas, each bringing something different to the space. See which coffee shop you could see yourself cozying up in with a hot drink this fall at our bio link. When interior designer Damon Liss (@damonlissdesign) set out to build his own home in the Hamptons from the ground up a couple of years ago, the pressure felt high. “It will be scrutinized on a pretty intense level by our clients and our friends,” he recalls thinking at the time, “so I agonized over everything.” Although the endeavor was stressful, it was also a labor of love that now holds some of his most treasured possessions, pieces of furniture that he and his wife had collected over the past two decades. And it gave him an opportunity to work closely with esteemed friends and collaborators, people like lighting designer @lindseyadelman and landscape architect @michaelderrig. In homeowners and cofounders of interior design firm @clarenceandgraves, Chris Graves and Jolene Ellis' home, the boldly black-lined bank of 12 windows, stretching the length of the south-facing apartment, perfectly contrasts with the ever changing shades of bucolic nature unfolding unencumbered across the seasons outside. “We call it the Somerset Serengeti,” Graves says. “We have cows or bulls running across from one side to the other, and there are always lambs breaking through roses,” Ellis adds. The owners would admit that every square inch of their Notting Hill house is alluring, not least because interior designer Kate Guinness (@kateguinnessdesign) has done what she does best: filling every room with elegant layers of color, texture, and pattern. It all starts with those walls. The designer leans toward timeless colors, the kind you might find in historic houses, which is the point. “My hope is that my clients never become bored or tired of them. On the other hand, I didn’t want colors that would overwhelm them either,” she says. Step inside the refreshed family abode at the link in our bio. “There’s a theme that’s echoing here: Because the home is so contained and small in scale, it makes certain risks feel less risky,” says interior designer and co-founder of @nickeykehoe, Amy Kehoe of Sarah Paulson's (@mssarahcatharinepaulson) Malibu oasis. Purple paint, swirled green quartzite, blush pink floor-to-ceiling zellige tile, and bold wallpaper in aubergine might not work splashed over large surfaces, but they feel just right in this space." Local architect Elizabeth Baird (@elizabethbairdarchitecture) took inspiration from various sources—such as the gardens of Japan and the neighborhood’s brick buildings, including the 1960s teardown that previously sat on the quarter-acre site—to design a tech couple's home in Austin, Texas whose front-facing modesty belies a courtyard sanctuary in the back. In its faintly ruddy tone, the modern architecture whispers of the Territorial style that prevails in the not-so-distant Southwest, imparting heritage warmth to the new build. Taking that cue, Austin-based #ADPRODirectory interior designer Liz MacPhail (@lizmacphailinteriors) opted to “let the house be the hero." “Kitchens are the heart of the home, so I wanted it to feel like it was always beating loudly,” designer Linda Hayslett (@lhdesigned) says of her contribution to this year's Iconic Home. To do this, she chose to create a space that was curated and modern, but that also took advantage of the beauty and imperfection of natural materials—like the wood grain in the cabinets, chairs, and flooring, and the waves in the travertine. “I wanted to bring in materials that we don’t see in kitchens often, such as warmer metals and a different natural stone,” she adds.
