The main focus of the #NormanFosterInstitute Programme on Sustainable Cities is to train scholars from different disciplines in the sustainable development of cities with strategies for the future. Scholars will experience hands-on field work and community engagement, will propose urban interventions focusing on neighbourhoods while developing communication, leadership and advocacy skills. The course on Sustainable Cities will be a 36-week programme in three stages—Foundations, Transformations and Interventions—with time divided between classrooms, cities and studios. The second stage of the Programme, 'Transformations' 🏙️, will be devoted to the layers of transformations of the city, essential skills and project development work. Scholars will study and debate these issues to create a small number of well- defined project assignments in the form of Challenges and Opportunities for neighbourhoods in each city. The course on Sustainable Cities will be a 36-week programme in three stages—Foundations, Transformations and Interventions—with time divided between classrooms, cities and studios. The first stage of the programme, 'Foundations' 📖, consists of an in-depth study of the concepts and processes necessary to understand a city, from its history, governance, ethics and metrics that define sustainable cities. Through seminars by experts followed by brainstorming and round-table debate with the academic body on themes and pilot cities, scholars will engage with the foundations of a city. From the #NFFArchive comes this preliminary study by #NormanFoster for the Crescent Wing extension to the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, U.K. The original, iconic building was completed in 1978. A decade later, more accommodation was required for the Centre’s laboratories, workshops, offices and study areas. Housed in a ‘undercroft’ level, this design rationally extends the building’s capacity. The plan is based around a triangular gallery and lecture space. Its segmental radius comprises a glazed wall which responds to the site’s natural contours and allow natural light to penetrate the new subterranean areas. Above ground, the mullions seamlessly rise to form a pedestrian handrail. #NormanFosterFoundation #SainsburyCentre
As part of its programme, the #NormanFosterInstitute will have an innovative laboratory that will support the scholars in the development of sustainability strategies for the pilot cities. The NFI Lab will bring together recent technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, augmented reality and interactive interfaces coupled with data-driven and evidence-based design methods to allow students to explore, test and evaluate their interventions. From the #NFFArchive axonometric detail for a proposed indoor athletics stadium in Frankfurt, Germany. Submitted as a competition entry for a woodland setting, #NormanFoster proposed an elegantly simple design which minimised visual intrusion. This was achieved by lowering the internal floor level below that of the surrounding ground, and designing the roof profile as a continuous segmental curve. As shown here, the entrance façade was given visual articulation by a projecting louvre canopy, while the roof’s steelwork supported integrated heating, lighting and ventilation services. Though it remained on paper, this design was a great spur to the studio’s future development of lightweight, energy-efficient structures. #NormanFosterFoundation

'Placemaking is related to the world of urban spaces – it is the infrastructure of streets, plazas, parks, bridges and connections – the urban glue that binds together the individual buildings and determines the DNA or identity of a town or city. Place is also the spirit, even if not spiritual by its origins. Masterplanning can encourage the compact, sustainable, walkable and equitable city. It can bring nature and biodiversity, whether as a protective green belt, in parks, avenues of trees or dispersed through the urban fabric to beautify and to clean the air we breathe'. From the more than 1,400 sketchbooks by #NormanFoster come these studies for the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank. They record his deep involvement in all aspects of the building’s design process, from the primary structure to the smallest details. Here, one drawing explores the dramatic possibilities of expressive articulation on the building’s exterior. Another considers how even such mundane objects as washbasins can be designed with elegant simplicity. The study for a helipad atop one of the Bank’s four steel masts provides a visual termination to the structure, and a practical provision for modern transportation. These drawings are among hundreds featured in Norman Foster Sketchbooks Volume II · 1981-1985. Tap to order your copy. #NormanFosterFoundation #NormanFoster #drawingfromsketchbook
