#internationalflashingawarenessday is over for 2023 but it's only 364 more days till August 26, 2024. I forgot to mention I apply flexible flashing tape to the corner prior to installing the metal flashing. Belt and suspenders. Sorry for the weak audio volume. #kickoutflashing #keepcraftalive #finehomebuilding #jlclive #jlconline

Happy #internationalflashingawarenessday I love a well-designed and well-executed cap flashing. Functional and Fashionable. The end detail options can be a point of contention between cap flashing aficionados - some advocate for an end dam while others support a turn-down end. I'm non-committal. How about you? Strong feelings one way or another? Sorry I'm not wearing my #flashme T shirt. I recorded this video before receiving the generous gift. #flashingawareness #finehomebuilding #jlclive #jlconline #keepcraftalive

Who has used roll lead for flashing? It was (and still may be) common in the southern New England area for 50+ years I used it. But I've noticed over the last 20 years that lead flashing is failing on lots of homes. Expansion/contraction splitting and corrosion (yes, lead does sort of corrode) leaving gaps and holes in the exposed parts of the lead flashing provides opportunities for leaks. In honor of #internationalflashingawarenessday August 26 (tomorrow) here's my brain dump on lead flashing and why those of you who still use it may want to use something else. Please correct me if I get something wrong with my explanation of the Achilles heel of Lead flashing. Lead flashing can last a very long time. The exposed surface of lead develops a protective layer of lead carbonate as rainwater carrying dissolved carbon dioxide falls naturally. If you've ever installed lead flashing you know that lead is a bright shiny gray color when it's unrolled and turns dull gray in a couple weeks. The lead carbonate layer is the dull gray color. The Lead carbonate layer protects the lead beneath the surface so it can last for hundreds of years. Lead 'corrosion' takes place from the underside. Counterintuitive. It's on the underside that condensation can take place. Condensed water is essentially distilled water. Distilled water is pretty pure - not a lot of dissolved carbon dioxide in it. Without the carbon dioxide in the water (and not much airflow to share it's carbon dioxide) the protective lead carbonate layer doesn't develop. The 'corrosion' is the formation of lead hydroxide. You can see the white powder in the video - that's it. And yes, it not good for you. The scary part is this white powder washes into the gutter and into the surrounding soil. I recommend not installing a rainwater harvesting system to a gutter where there's lead flashing higher up on the roof. Lead-coated copper isn't prone to this problem since the 'underside' of the lead is not exposed. There's copper there instead. #finehomebuilding #flashing #flashingawareness #nationalflashingawarenessday #keepcraftalive #jlclive #jlconline #leadflashing #leadflashings #copperflashing

#internationalflashingawarenessday is August 26th I learn more from the mistakes I make and the mistakes of others - like in this case. The remodelers who installed these windows applied the housewrap over the window flanges. The wrap acted as a bond break preventing the flashing tape from sealing to the flange essentially defeating it's purpose. At least they were consistent - all 16 windows were done similarly. There are several additional flashing blunders they executed on the house unfortunately. None of this was evident to the home inspector when he checked the house prior to the owner purchasing it 3 years ago. #finehomebuilding, #flashing #flashingawareness, #windowflashing #windowleak #keepcraftalive #jlconline

Emerald Ash Borers have killed all the ashes in my area. Though this tree had a little life left in it the dead limbs were likely to fall into the adjacent garden and hit someone. I usually run two cables at a 20° to 30° angle to ensure a tree falls precisely where I want. And yes, I measured the height of the tree and picked an anchor tree that was 20+ feet further away to be safe. I dropped 4 ashes so far on this lot and have a dozen more trees to drop.

How long will it take before someone stops and picks up this pile of nicad based tools? These were 'state of the art' 20 years ago. Dinosaurs today. But perhaps useful to someone - hopefully. #oldtools #batterytools #cordlesstools #freetools

How do you fasten down underlayment when it'll be left exposed for a few days - and stormy weather is forecast? We cap fastened 4"-6"" along horizontal laps, 4" at edges/ends, and 2' in the field. Fortunately the house is in a forest so the trees should break the wind. #roofing #roofunderlayment #roofingunderlayment #capstapler #capnailer #roofingworkshop #keepcraftalive #finehomebuilding #jlclive #jlconline

Bit of a rant. Think about the person who will be making repairs in the future - it may be you. If you like granular ice barrier membrane please apply tar paper over it before the roofing. Or use ice barrier with a plastic cap sheet - there are many brands. Net-Net the cost is similar between the granular with tarpaper and plastic capped membrane. Thank you for thinking of the future workers. #asphaltshingles #icebarrier #icebarrierdeck #peelandstickunderlayment #decouplingmembrane #roofingworkshop #thankaroofer

Have you ever stripped and reshingled a roof in this poor of a condition? There's only one layer so nothing beneath to help keep the water out. We planned on roofing this barn after we roofed the main house 20+ years ago. But like most carpenters my brother lets things go at his own place and focuses on working at paying jobs. Addison and I will be here for a little while. #roofing #roofingworkshop #keepcraftalive #finehomebuilding #jlclive
