'Unexpected sunset' 2022 This project was a deeply profound experience. In a past life i was a drummer in a bunch of noisy alternative bands, nothing ever compared to playing with my friend Elliot Jay. One of the most talented musicians i ever met, a child prodigy in violin, a guitarist, pianist, songwriter... he excelled at bass. Being a rhythm section the sense of connectivity is vital, a unit, driving and dancing in time and space. Over the 17+ years i knew his demons inside out, i watched him grow and fight to be himself, to be here despite re living his past trauma in varying forms. During the pandemic, thrown into isolation we kept in touch online. Sadly El's mobility had drastically reduced and his body was struggling under the weight of prescribed medications for his mental health of which the dosage had been upped to alarming levels. I mentioned my 2020 love affair with beat making to El, it was something i myself had sought solace in whilst having a post mural tour breakdown. I had acquired a NI Maschine, perfect for tinkering around on... and so persuaded Elliot to get one. He sent me a bunch of tunes which sadly we never got the chance to collaborate on, untill now. In May 2022, I landed in LA for my birthday, on arrival i got the news that Elliot had left this Realm for good, his own choice. I was never going to be ready for this despite understanding his reasons. Jet lagged, shocked and guilty i scrolled back to find the original riffs in our messages. From hearing the first note it brought him back to me, memories of jamming, laughing and goofing around, getting giddy about writing good shit, thinking we might take over the world... young and free. Thank you for the life lessons, for showing me true courage, a spiritual guide reminding me that i too can find that courage to accept my trans identity, you were a pioneer that came out at a time of little to no acceptance. 'Elemental' Cbloxx, Downtown Los Angeles 2021 ‘Elemental’ draws its primary inspiration from Leonardo Da Vinci quotes around nature. He derived a solid belief that everything in the universe is connected and that through studying/observing nature we can learn about everything. I hoped downtown locals could escape into ethereal Californian landscapes , the overwhelming beauty thats right on the doorstep ... and it's fragility. In many ways the global change we are living in has encouraged humans to reconnect with nature as a form of self medication/meditation. Undeniably we as a civilization have taken much for granted and as the world still spins on its head maybe one silver lining and a reminder we could all use is that we need her (mother nature) more than she needs us: 'Nature is the source of all true knowledge. She has her own logic, her own laws, she has no effect without cause nor invention without necessity' Leonardo Da Vinci As technology advances the world becomes more and more digitized, exacerbated by the global pandemic our carbon footprints are becoming ever more complicated. Observers, thinkers, dreamers and creatives how do we receive the weight of responsibility and change, does it bend us? Akumal, Mexico (2020) Mid-pandemic, with a US-international travel ban in effect and a scant few places we could even meet, our reunion was set for Akumal, Mexico. We didn’t realize it at the time, but the project/adventure would reveal how much cosmic beauty still remains in this world when you pause to take a look. During our stay @akumalartsfestival we took a day long roundtrip journey from Akumal pueblo to Sian Ka’an Biosphere with Ibraham, a charismatic tour guide, educator + proud Yucatec Mayan. Rambling down a dirt road which often resembled the surface of the moon, we absorbed hours of Ibraham’s wisdom. One observation resonated in particular — ‘We are in the Riviera Maya, but where are the Maya?’ This simple question lingered in the air and on our minds, transforming the way we interpreted the landscape as we progressed, ultimately informing the narrative for this mural and short film. ’Twin Heroes’ is one of the most famous Mayan myths, a story told to demonstrate the complementary pairings of life + death, sky + earth, sun + moon. As per nerdy standard, Jay extensively researched the tale, which speaks of reincarnation, energy transfer, of two brothers in perpetual pursuit of enlightenment until they are ultimately reanimated as deities. It seemed so fitting for a mural that was to be created at the school entrance, in tribute to two former students who had tragically lost their lives.
