I haven't been very active on this account for the past few months. Yes, I'm still a makeup artist! Yes I still post selfies, just on @everythingandjane now. 😉 I've been in the beauty industry for over 11 years. Honestly, it had become hard for me to work in an industry that perpetuated an ideal beauty standard that is difficult to achieve. A standard I don't even achieve. Makeup carries a lot of societal weight. This industry revolves around worth. Who is worthy to be seen, who is worthy to be promoted, who is valued by the people. While I tried to devote my artistry to only work with inclusive brands, photographers, marginalized models etc. It was difficult as a freelance artist to pay the bills, without working with larger brands who had the ability to pay me well. As an ongoing student of my craft, I didn't want to turn down opportunities to assist incredible artists. I was working a balancing act that started to become so difficult I considered leaving the beauty industry entirely. Then a catalyst appeared in the form of breaking a bond with an emotionally and mentally abusive person. It was after that I realized I had been groomed to second-guess and self-edit myself, internalizing everything that was said to me. Releasing that toxicity cleared my plate for amazing opportunities! Which brings me to what I've been up to! *I get to be the general manager/personal assistant for @Sugaring.Brooklyn an all-gender body-positive safe space to remove hair. *I've been consulting with @nudest.co who created AI technology that helps people match products, like makeup, to skin tones. Most importantly they have been building this AI to be racially inclusive! *I have been doing fun creative shoots and weddings! I have focused on challenging traditional wedding industry standards, like insane prices, bridezilla tropes, archaic gendered traditions, etc. Through all this I'm able to hold space for people and their truths in a way I wasn't able to before! I am happy. For the first time in a very long time. I'm still around! I'm just working really hard in the background to figure out what I can contribute to this crazy world to make it a little better. ❤️
