The only thing she ever stole was a pocket sized illustrated book (from a family friend and it was promptly returned). Simona has worked as an art director, designer, and illustrator for award winning firms and clients in Portland, Or, NYC and Albany, NY. Her current focus is on work aiming to capture the elusive magic and ethereal qualities of treasured stories. She aims to spread the magic of visual narrative via brand identity, print, public art, children’s books, surface design, motion design, and any other available mediums. Simona holds a double BA in Advertising and Visual Design, from the University of Oregon, and is currently pursuing an MFA at the Vermont College of Fine Art focusing on integrating illustration and design thinking. experiments from my first semester inspired by inter generational work created by women in my family. Romanian point lace is an ornamental lace created from thick cotton, off-white thread and is designed and then painstakingly created over a lengthy period of time. During the winter when there was not farm work to do, peasant women would create this lace which would become an heirloom ornamental piece usually displayed flat on a dining table or coffee table in the home. #mfaexperiments #womenswork #romanianpointlace #vcfadesignlove #vcfadesign #simofig8studio

hello 👋 I’m Simona Bortis-Schultz, currently in my third semester toward an MFA in Graphic Design at VCFA expected in fall ‘22. I’m doing an insta takeover this week showing a mix of my MFA explorations and current freelance work. I’m originally from Eastern Europe (Romania) and my design background has been working as an art director + designer and recently refocused towards integrating more illustration into design, as well as teaching as an adjunct professor here in Upstate NY at SUNY Cobleskill. Illustrated design projects where there is positive, community impact + a rich, visual narrative are some of the work that inspires me. A recent super graphics project within a shopping mall makes art accessible to everyone in a bright, flowy, positive, interlude as they head to the mall lounge. Vic’s fellowship grant will help to support the launch of their inclusive menstrual products brand! “My goal is to create the first brand that acknowledges four specific target audiences: trans, queer, non-binary, and gender-nonconforming folks that typically get ignored in the menstrual products industry as consumers. As part of creating this brand and company, my ultimate goal is to get into sales points such as drug stores and grocery stores (accessible points of sale) with a line of products that can compete with established brands’ prices in this industry. I want to make sure we cater to trans, queer, non-binary, and gender-nonconforming folks first, which no company does in markets such as convenience stores.” The Center for Arts + Social Justice Fellowship Grant is a $2,000 one-time award, available annually to one student in each program to support work and/or practice at the juncture of arts and social justice.
