An estimated half a million women and girls worldwide are living with obstetric fistula today. This tragic childbirth injury is caused by prolonged, obstructed labour in the absence of timely and adequate medical care. It leaves women and girls with a hole between the birth canal and bladder and/or rectum, which can result in chronic medical problems, depression, social isolation and deepening poverty. On Tuesday's International Day to #EndFistula, the #UnitedNations Population Fund (UNFPA) is working to spread the message: no woman should suffer needlessly from a preventable condition like fistula. Biodiversity and healthy ecosystems are a lifeline that we must nurture and protect. ⠀ Yet, human activity is driving biodiversity loss around the world. ⠀ "Our actions are devastating every corner of the planet. One million species are at risk of extinction - the result of habitat degradation, skyrocketing pollution, and the worsening climate crisis,” said #UnitedNations Secretary-General @antonioguterres on Monday's #BiodiversityDay, stressing "We must end this war on nature." We all can be part of the solution #ForNature and people. Women play a critical role in achieving lasting peace around the world. In all fields of #UnitedNations peacekeeping missions, women have proven that they can perform the same roles, to the same standards & under the same difficult conditions as their male counterparts. Women help reduce conflict, serve as role models, provide a greater sense of security, and are essential to building trust & forging strong relationships with the communities. @unpeacekeeping is working to ensure women's full, equal and meaningful participation in peace and political processes. 👉 Scroll through to see photos of women peacekeepers from Nepal raising awareness about gender-based violence as part of their work with the UN peacekeeping mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA). 📸: @un_minusca #ServingForPeace #GlobalGoals

🐝 Have a look at this honey bee collecting pollen from flowers. 🌸 Our very existence depends on bees and other pollinators. They increase food production, give us honey and nutritious food, and are key in achieving the #GlobalGoals. Yet, these guardians of biodiversity are under threat from human activities. The good news is that we can all help protect bees and support beekeepers by growing native plants, buying raw honey from local farmers, avoiding pesticides and taking #ClimateAction. On Saturday's #WorldBeeDay, join us in celebrating the vital role these pollinators play in our lives! ⠀ 📸: @fao /Greg Beals

Plastic waste can take up to 1,000 years to decompose, harming marine life, damaging soil, posing health risks and destabilizing the climate. The good news is that economically viable solutions exist to sustainably reduce the risks. Plastic pollution could decrease by 80% by 2040 if governments and companies make policy and market shifts using existing technologies. The world can #BeatPlasticPollution for a more sustainable future if each of us does our part. Change starts with you: #ActNow! 💧 Use refillable water bottles 🍴 Refuse plastic cutlery ☕️ 🛍️ Bring your own coffee cups & shopping bag Regram: @unep #ClimateAction #GlobalGoals

In Yemen, where one woman dies during pregnancy and childbirth every two hours, midwives like Aydan are working to protect the lives of mothers and their babies. Aydan works at the Al Shaab Hospital, where women are able to access free reproductive healthcare, thanks to support from the #UnitedNations Population Fund (UNFPA). Yet, chronic underfunding is putting this vital assistance at risk. Al Shaab Hospital, along with more than 90 other healthcare facilities, may be forced to close without additional resources. In #Yemen, and around the world, @unfpa works to provide health and reproductive services to vulnerable women and girls, including those caught up in humanitarian crises.
