From the intro to our latest interview, with the incredible Shannon Perich, Curator of the Photographic History Collection at the National Museum of American History: "When the Smithsonian reached out to us about their new exhibition, we jumped at the chance for a conversation. We've never interviewed a curator before, found that idea very enticing, but we also flipped over the opportunity to discuss Richard Avedon at length. Shannon Perich, Curator of the Photographic History Collection at the National Museum of American History, was the perfect person to speak with and to lead this exhibit. Our conversation was thoroughly engaging, we could've talked to her all day! We talked about how she goes about developing an exhibit of this size and depth, Avedon and his legacy (which is still vital to this day), and how her journey led her both to the museum and to Avedon." From the intro to our latest photo essay, by @jtrav "Being an only child has always made me feel a little bit like a solo act. And I’ve always loved working on my own. Whether it's songwriting, drawing, photography, or another craft. But I long for collaboration, community, and connection as well. Working with people allows me to create something bigger than myself. I play well with others." LINK IS IN OUR PROFILE

From the intro to our latest photo essay, by @celinaodeh "On a windy week in October, thirty women sail to a mystic British isle looking for The Selkie. The Selkie is no mermaid, she is a mystical seal-like creature. When the Selkie goes ashore, they leave their seal skin behind and assume the form of a beautiful woman. Often, these skins are stolen by men on the land and hidden, so that the Selkie is trapped and forced to marry and live as a human. What happens when the thirty women who just landed ashore hear the wind and water calling them back?" LINK IS IN OUR PROFILE

As the lazy days of summer are upon us, we're gonna be showing y'all some of our favorite photo essays from the archives. Let's start with this classic from @__mattfry and the late @mikamae. Here's some of Matt's intro, to whet the appetite: "I don’t think either of us would have been willing to suffer what we had for us to meet. My mother had been in and out of the hospital, and just before we were to shoot, Mika lost her mother… she lost her best friend. I don’t know what that’s like, and I don’t know if I could take it, but I do know that I had met an extraordinary person that day. I’ve found in my life the strongest people are those willing to be vulnerable. I admire Mika." LINK IS IN OUR PROFILE

From the intro to our latest photo essay, by @lachystarling: "This series of photographs explores the subcultures of Eastern Australia’s music communities. Years and years of conservative governments have slowly chipped away at the music industry, seeing lots of Sydney's classic venues getting sold off cheap. Lock-out laws had mostly killed Sydney's nightlife but the scene was resilient enough to survive." LINK IS IN OUR PROFILE

More from the intro to our latest photo essay, by Benjamin Cremel: "If seaside promenades could talk, Beirut’s Corniche would have plenty to narrate. Once buzzing with careless beachgoers and Mediterranean waves, the boardwalk has been witness to everything from civil war to broken dreams. It’s hard not to notice the group of heavily-tanned men, young and old, congregating around what appears to be an infinity pool backdropped by snow-capped mountains and freshly built skyscrapers." From the intro to our latest photo essay, by Benjamin Cremel: "They talk about their love for the sun and sea. Some apply tanning oils, others prefer carrot creams. Some shave their legs, others boast hairy chests. Some play racquetball, others bet on cards. Some worship the Prophet, others swear by Jesus. There’s no right or wrong, no one is judging. They feel free here, on the edge of their broken country." LINK IS IN OUR PROFILE

From the intro to our latest photo essay, by @natgarciaet: "My mother’s apartment is located in the orthodox Jewish neighborhood and most of my neighbors belong to the community. During the strictest quarantine, the closure of religious temples was a measure to contain and prevent the spread of Covid. As the synagogues were closed, the balconies of my neighborhood became sacred spaces where twice a day Orthodox Jewish men went out to pray. For three months, the rhythm of my days was marked by the chants in Hebrew that managed to penetrate the windows of my house. A rhythm that I found comforting at a time of uncertainty." More from our feature on Elizabeth Sunflower, brought to us by @retrophotoarchive and @RetroBlakesberg "Sunflower had a thirst for documenting the burgeoning women's liberation movement. Many of her subjects were iconic young women breaking barriers in a still conservative time. Legendary exotic dancers like Carol Doda and Lola anchored a blossoming scene in North Beach as innovators of their time. Doda was the first public topless dancer in the United States. Dancers like Doda began the long and continued process of normalizing female sexuality by reclaiming ownership of their own bodies and the narrative of female empowerment. Sunflower captured the ethos of these women and the clubs, including The Condor, El Cid, Big Als, The Naked Seduction and others, many of which still populate the North Beach neighborhood today. From our latest feature, a co-production with @retrophotoarchive and @retroblakesberg , a piece highlighting the work of Elizabeth Sunflower: "We can see in Elizabeth Sunflower’s images the tension between morality, equality and justice that continue to be relevant today. These photographs display early signs of the feminist movement and the strength of women uniting to claim their power. 50 years later, we find ourselves protesting many of the same rights and issues that this group of women fought to address and which are being threatened by a group of conservative men (and women) in positions of power. Sunflowers’ photographs from 50 years ago are an unfortunate mirror to our present." LINK IS IN OUR PROFILE!
