Should art and design works be signed? I need to decide. Would love your ruling: “What say you?” To sign or not to sign? I struggle with this question. It’s considered tacky and pretentious to have a visible signature. Artworks post 80s are generally signed in pencil or on the back. But then again art and design collectors love others to recognize the name of the artists they acquire… I feel it’s similar to luxury brands. Having a bag with a giant “Hermes” logo is looked down upon and yet a Hermes Kelly bag is in of itself a “Logo” of wealth and status. Should we abide by conventions? And which option will be more successful? The one that openly acknowledges the brand power of the one whose brand power relies on being recognized by a select few? What do you prefer as an artist?
