Last night, Arturo Rodriguez (@arturorguezdotcom) had the opportunity to shoot this stunning video along with @ume_esp (Emergency Military Unit) and IGME-CSIC (Geological and Mining Institute of Spain from Spanish National Research Council) during the eruption of Cumbre Vieja volcano. The ongoing event marks the first time that a volcano on La Palma island has erupted since 1971. The island of La Palma is part of the Spanish Canary Islands and is one of the most volcanically active zones in the archipelago with a population of about 85,000 people. The latest eruption was preceded by several earthquake swarms. Careful monitoring allowed officials to begin some evacuations before the lava started flowing, after 30 days of eruption more than 7000 villagers have been evacuated and almost 1000 homes have been destroyed by the ongoing eruption. #CanaryIslands #lapalma #Spain #volcancumbrevieja

Previously, there was not a simple definition for this cultural group that merges Chinese, Malay, and Western aesthetics, heritage and values. A recent research by the Genome Institute of Singapore sheds light on the genetic identity of the community and its long history, its findings confirmed that Peranakan Chinese have Chinese-Malay ancestry. Aspen Dieback brought about by prolonged drought as a result of climate change has made these aspen forests susceptible to insect infestation and other threats. Aspen become increasingly unhealthy, eventually dying and falling. Tent caterpillars are thought to be a major cause of Aspen Dieback but research is in the early stages and much is still unknown. The problem of climate change induced Aspen Dieback is compounded by the fact that the boreal forest is the world’s greatest terrestrial carbon sink as well as one its most concentrated and as a result it is one of our greatest allies in the fight against climate change and global warming. However as these aspen forests die and decompose they release their massive stored carbon into the atmosphere further fuelling climate change and the conditions that are causing Aspen Dieback. #AspenDieback #ForestThreats #borealforest #climatechange
