Around 700 million people went to bed hungry last year, an alarming increase of 122 million people, compared to 2019 before the global pandemic. We need to use every tool we have to grow more nutritious food in an environmentally sustainable way. Ensuring food security and healthy diets amid many shifting challenges is a complex endeavour. In response, the IAEA and @FAO have launched #Atoms4Food, an initiative that will harness nuclear know-how to bolster food security around the world. Atoms4Food aims to combat the growing global hunger crisis and empower countries with innovative nuclear techniques to: ✅ Boost agricultural productivity ✅ Minimize food losses ✅ Ensure food safety ✅ Improve nutrition ✅ Adapt to climate change challenges This joint initiative builds on nearly six decades of IAEA and FAO experience in supporting countries in using nuclear and isotope technology to enhance food security, nutrition, and food safety. Today we are announcing #Atoms4Food, an IAEA/@fao initiative that will harness 60 years of nuclear know-how to bolster food security around the world, from Africa’s cassava yields to South America’s banana farms.

On this day in 1956, the world’s first full-scale #nuclear power station was opened in the United Kingdom in the presence of Queen Elizabeth II. “This new power…is harnessed for the first time for the common good of our community,” the Queen declared at Calder Hall in Cumberland shortly before pulling the lever that directed electricity from the power station into the national power grid. Twenty-four kilometers north, Workington became the first town to receive light, heat and power from nuclear energy. The first nuclear-powered electricity spread to London within four hours. 67 years later, nuclear power continues to be a reliable and low carbon energy source that many countries are considering or have added to their energy mixes.

💧 Water isn't just life's essence, it's agriculture's lifeblood - securing harvests and a hunger-free world. Around 70% of global freshwater is used in the agriculture, yet water use efficiency in many countries is below 50%. By using #nuclear and isotopic techniques we can track how we use water and where water is lost due to soil evaporation, helping us use water more efficiently, especially for irrigation.
