My baby was born with straight hair before her beautiful curls came in! Here’s everything you need to know about how baby hair changes throughout the first few years of life. Too often, baby hair care is overlooked and not given the same attention as adult hair care. As a parent, it’s natural to worry when your newborn has hair loss. If it’s one area on the back of their head, don’t stress—it’s actually quite common. In fact, your baby’s hair loss is just a normal part of their development. Despite what you may hear, newborn hair loss can be totally normal and usually resolves itself. Baby hair fall outs, grow backs and changes throughout the first few years of life. I have been fortunate to have President Mona Gohara (2022-23) of the Women's Dermatologic Society in my life. She is an amazing leader and friend, a true champion of our cause. Changing the conversation about AD! I had the pleasure of participating in an amazing patient advocacy panel on caring for children and their families with atopic dermatitis at the recent MOPD meeting. It's easy to forget how much work and dedication it takes by #moms and #dads to care for affected children. But it was inspiring to hear from the panelists about how they are making a difference in their local communities, and how this is helping to change the conversation about atopic dermatitis. The panelists shared their #heartfelt stories and experiences, and the importance of patient advocacy in this area. It was humbling to learn about the challenges families and #parents have faced. The most important takeaway for me is that we, as physicians, must continue to focus on the lived patient experience. We must listen to each family member affected by atopic dermatitis, and ask “how are you doing?” It was a strong reminded that, even though we are talking about a medical condition, there is also an emotional and social aspect to it. This is something that we need to consider when we discuss ways to improve care. We must also recognize the value of patient advocacy, and the role it plays in making sure that these #children receive the best care possible. This panel was a great reminder that we are all in this together! I just finished speaking at the Masters of Pediatric Dermatology conference about atopic dermatitis and psoriasis, two skin conditions that are very close to my heart. It was an honor to share my knowledge and experience with my fellow professionals. At the end of the day, our mission as dermatologists is to do whatever we can to help people with their skin-related issues. We must be proactive, stay up-to-date on the latest research, and continue to learn and grow in our field. For my birthday this year, I’ve chosen to celebrate by restoring, relaxing and refreshing. It's been an amazing past year and I'm looking forward to many more ahead. But this year I'm taking a different approach to my birthday. Rather than just celebrating with a bang, I'm taking the time to dedicate my efforts to restoring my health. I'm prioritizing my health by taking time to step away from the daily grind and full schedule of life. It's so easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of life. I know that taking this time to unplug, relax, and recharge is essential for balance and a healthy lifestyle. Taking the time to refresh and re-energize means eating healthy, getting enough sleep, moving my body and engaging in activities that bring me joy. By taking the time to restore, relax and refresh, I'm hoping to set the tone for the rest of the year. I'm more determined than ever to take care of myself and prioritize my health. I have found this conscious, deliberate choice to take time for myself to relax and get grounded to be very POWERFUL. I wish for us all to simply enjoying being alive and appreciating the life around us!
