Tonight we will be bringing our “Voices of Mississippi” multimedia live show to Jackson, Mississippi. On Friday, we visit Nashville for a show at Vanderbilt. Marinês, birth name Inês Caetano de Oliveira, was a Brazilian singer known as “The Queen of Xaxado.” Born in 1934 and raised in the city of Campina Grande-Paraíba, she grew up in the Liberdade neighborhood. Marinês was a standout in northeastern popular music, especially in forró and xaxado. Marinês gained popularity in northeastern Brazil and became one of the main representatives of the region’s musical culture. Her talent and dedication to the culture of her region made her an iconic figure on the Brazilian music scene. Marinês passed away in 2007, but her legacy continues to live on through her music and influence on northeastern culture.
