After winning gold in the men’s eight at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in 2021, Tom Mackintosh 🇳🇿 took some time out, but broke back into the squad in time for the 2023 World Rowing Championships and a chance to qualify his boat for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. He had a superb regatta in Belgrade, making the A-final and rowing a strong race to secure bronze, just ahead of Olympic champion Stefanos Ntouskos of Greece. 🎤 “We knew that everyone had pretty close times in the heats through the first couple of markers, so we tried to stay as calm as possible, not let it fluster us. We were actually just really happy to sit there. Once we knew we were still in the race, we just tried to twist the knife a bit more and the third 500 was pretty good. I was pretty happy with the whole race. We set out and did exactly what we set out to do. There’s always stuff to improve on and our coach will no doubt find about five things that we could have done better. Back to the drawing board and back to training, plenty to work on.” Despite pressure from the rest of the pack, Great Britain defend their Men’s Eights title - becoming the first country to be junior, under-23 and senior world champion in the boat class. 🎤 “The World Championships is such ups and downs and rollercoaster of emotions. Sometimes you’re lucky and sometimes you’re really unlucky, and sometimes you perform and sometimes you don’t. For me who lives and breathes in the team environment - we’re together six days a week, 52 weeks a year, we live each other’s dreams and live alongside each other and invest in each other, and really deeply care for each other, we’ve been years and years together on this journey. We’re in this boat together, and I’m just so relieved and so happy. This is not only the end of this season, it’s the start of the journey to Paris, with four boats and seven athletes. I’ve been to two summer Paralympics, and I know how much dedication and hard work and emotions that’s in it. I’m a little scared because I know it’s going to take it all from all of us, but I’m just so deeply in love with this journey.” Birgit Skarstein remains on top of the PR1 Women’s Single Sculls podium with another victory, but she was pushed all the way by her rivals. Israel’s Moran Samuel was second for the early part of the race, but France’s Nathalie Benoit ansd Ukraine’s Anna Sheremet piled on the pressure in the last quarter. 🎤 “It was amazing. It was one of the best races that we’ve made in the eight. I’m really grateful for this result. We knew that the second part of the race would be ours. We did exactly what we talked (about) before. I didn’t feel it was so close because I was so concentrated in the boat, but I knew that every team is very strong. We all are so amazing women here, because what we do, it’s men’s work.” An amazing race in the women’s eights sees five crews in contact on the line, with Romania winning. The USA take a superb second, and Australia beat Great Britain for bronze. Olympic champions Canada are fifth, ensuring they will get a chance to defend their title in Paris. I hope that (the junior and under-23 world champions) can keep knuckling down, keep working and keep improving as they get older.
