We're thrilled to announce the release of our latest short film, Heavenly Vessel, which explores the fear of transformation and change. What's particularly exciting about this project is that it marks the directorial debut of Venla, who was the second person we hired when we started our studio. Seeing her growth as an artist and leader has been amazing, and we're proud to see her at the helm of this film. It's also the first short to come out of our development department headed up by Lisa Smith. Heavenly Vessel features some of the most detailed animation we've ever done. We'd like to give a special shout-out to Amanda Holm, who led the animation team, Juancho for the incredible art direction, Clarisse for leading the way on compositing, Kača for her excellent production work, and Michaela, who stepped into the role of Production Manager for the first time and ran a tight ship to ensure everything ran smoothly. We're also extremely proud to have collaborated with Emily Hopkins. Emily is an incredible musician and harpist. We love how experimental she is with such a classical instrument like the harp, creating musical compositions that are mesmerising, beautiful and haunting. Emily’s work on this film is truly stunning. She worked with her partner Russ and they were a dream to collaborate with. Ok, so this is the sequence in the film where it all kicks of, and dare we say, gets a bit sexy. We don't think we could have fit more people into these shots. This entire sequence is incredibly intense. We had a sense that we could push our animation capabilities even further if we wanted to, and somehow, we managed to pull it off. This makes the sequence special to us because it shows what we can do when we mean business. The amount of detail, the sensuality of the animation by Allan Michaut, Louis Holmes, and Clara Schildhauer, combined with the incredible subsurface comp by Florian and Clarisse, makes this sequence magical. Skin touching skin, atmosphere, sparkles, and light passing through skin are really challenging. This entire sequence was super difficult. In Heavenly Vessel, we embarked on an unorthodox journey to create the planet. Here's a fun fact for you: we used a method harking back to old-school SFX filmmaking, where we mixed milk, coffee, and a touch of paint to craft the planet's surface. By filming this concoction, we achieved the illusion of depth in the planet's atmosphere, giving it a rich and organic feel. This same method was employed to create the patterns in the background of the first and last shots, respectively. What proved particularly challenging for the compositing team was depicting the visual representation of the planet's magnetic pull, which beckons all living things into its embrace. Initially, the strands didn't quite feel right, resembling a post-effect rather than something natural. Our primary objective was to make the planet appear as though it was distorting light, akin to a captivating black hole. However, with dedication and a touch of love, it all came together beautifully. Thank you for all the love you guys have given us, Venla, and the film since it’s been released. It means a lot. We wanted to share some of the making-of process for the animation, so we can celebrate the incredible crew who put their heart and soul into this film. Starting with this stunning sequence of shots. Spoiler alert if you haven't seen the film yet! These specific scenes mark the culmination of the prince's transformation, representing an important moment in the film. They emerge from an almost cocoon-like beginning, symbolising their rebirth The drawings, animation, and clean up are so, so beautiful in these shots we’d probably have to say it's the most technical and time-consuming work we’ve ever done. We love this sequence of shots. They have a really cool mix of complex motorbike animation (all key animated btw 💅) Big shout to Mourad Seddik, who turned out some brilliant bike animation on this project! Quick cuts, cool FX and lols. Surprisingly, the part that we struggled with most in this sequence was the ground plane in the first shot. The idea was to make it feel like the camera is level with the ground, whilst also creating the illusion of a camera rotation. So we hand painted the floor plane with speedlines and animated it moving in the opposite direction to the background environment - cheating it to make it work. If you look closely at each stage of the breakdown, the floor plane in the shot changes. It’s because those are some of the failed attempts to get it right. We didn’t do much camera projection in this film. But this is one really cool example of it. Camera projection is when you project an image, or in this case a painting with an animated element, onto 3d geometry, using the virtual camera like a projector. It’s a really cool technique to be able to give a camera a little bit of depth. "We had such a blast creating the Great British Bake Off 2023 promo, we put together a behind-the-scenes film to give you a glimpse of how much fun it was to work on. From storyboarding and design to rolling eggs on the streets and parks of London, all the way into the actual Bake Off tent!
