Located in the Merwedekanaal in the neighborhood Rivierenwijk in Utrecht, we designed this houseboat for a close friend and his family. The houseboat opens up maximally to the water and has a more intimate relationship with the green front yard on the shore. The contemporary appearance is provided by a composition of large openings. The houseboat's robust character comes from the dark aluminum plinth with the construction of vertical wooden slats and black window frames. Inside, the houseboat has a clean but warm atmosphere due to the openwork wooden ceiling combined with walls and floors in light shades. The different spaces and functions within the open floor plan are defined by the core and height difference. To be able to create different spaces a sliding door was introduced This allows the open space to be subdivided into small areas and creates a living room with an intimate atmosphere. Next to the kitchen a deep seating niche was introduced in de façade, strengthening the relationship between inside and outside. Solar panels on the roof provide the energy needs. Omega In the vincinity of Rotterdam construction on the new head office of PCS gebouwautomatisering will start next week: a circular and energy-positive office building. The main structure is made up of wooden columns, beams and CLT floors. Stability is obtained from a concrete core. Due to the large amount of wood, the building stores CO2. The building is more than energy neutral: it generates its entire energy needs, including the user's share. The entire building is designed to be circular and demountable. The main load-bearing structure, watertight shell, installations, and all materials used can all be separated from each other so they can easily be replaced or reused. To make this possible in the future, all materials have been included in a material passport. No glue, PVC or PU will be found in the building. The building is designed as a two-storey volume that is raised from the ground level to allow parking under the building and out of sight. Overhanging facade bands vary in depth depending on the orientation and therefore also serve as sun blinds. The top of these bands are provided with a green herb mix. The asymmetrical volume offers space for a sheltered roof garden. A recognizable and covered entrance has been spared at the head of the volume. Yes! We are proud to announce that we have won the selection for the renovation and expansion of the former Rubenslaan school in Utrecht. After the renovation, the Kromme Rijn College (a secondary school for special education) will move into the building. The existing school has been unoccupied for a long time and was even nominated for demolition. This was prevented by a neighborhood initiative and after research by @mevrouw_meijer it turned out to be very suitable to accommodate the KRC. We are very excited to get started on this beautiful building from 1957. It has a lot of light, high spaces and attention has been paid to all details. It is going to be made sustainable and made suitable for the future in a circular manner. The Kromme Rijn district where the school is located has a high cultural and historical value at an area level. The architectural quality of the individual buildings is high, there is a choice of explicitly Utrecht architects. A very nice surprise: last Wednesday, during the presentation of the @architectenweb Awards 2022, we received the new Architect & Copyright Award, handed out and initiated by Kees van der Hoeven. An award for: 'exemplary, careful and respectful renovation of an important existing building in consultation with the original architect'. We received the award for the redesign of the former head office of the SuikerUnie in Breda in consultation with the then still living architect Wim Quist (1930-2022). The transformation of Cosun 1 is in full swing. The former head office of the Suikerunie was designed in the 70's by Wim Quist. The building was carefully stripped and construction is well underway. The high ceilings, distinguishable shape and free compartibility lend themselves well to special apartments with a great diversity. The interventions are designed to match the striking and solitary character of the building. Construction has started on De Boemerang: a primary school in the heart of Ondiep, Utrecht. Ondiep is a working-class neighborhood that is very stony with little green. Part of the task was therefore to add green to the neighborhood and to make the square more liveable. Ondiep has an orthogonal subdivision with mainly residential buildings. The location of the school is a head of such a residential block and in its front facade it also participates in the orthogonal design language and materials of the neighborhood (brick). Leaving the building slightly set back from the sidewalk creates space for a green forecourt. At the rear, away from the street is the square. Here, in contrast to the hard front, we opted for a soft design language with flowing shapes and a warm cladding in wood. This creates a nice square where the meandering facade automatically creates places on the squares that are subdivided for the different grades. Existing large trees will be maintained and the square will be way more green than the existing one. New project! 4 houses with a view over the Hollandse IJssel. The living areas are situated on the first floor to maximize the view over the water. The sawtooth façade give the houses an individual recognizability and a better view over the water without losing privacy.
