Flea Closure. After lots of difficult and emotional discussions, we, the founders and organisers of the Dublin Flea Market, have come to the conclusion that we are not in a position to operate the Dublin Flea Market anymore. Therefore the Dublin Flea Market will officially cease operation at the end of 2021. This was not a decision we made easily, in fact it was not a decision we feel like we had full control over. This decision was sired by the unfortunate red tape and rocketing rents of the ever difficult Dublin City, where cultural spaces are at an all time low and buildings are still being demolished to make way for more hotels and overpriced office blocks. The reality of the pandemic also played its part and the shift in focus and energy that brought many of us to exodus the constricting confines of the city walls. The Dublin Flea was a focal point for us in Dublin. We invested our hearts and so much energy into it over an amazing eleven years. We hosted thousands of traders who travelled from all over Ireland and as far as the U.K and France to trade with us. We also welcomed hundreds of thousands of happy market visitors from Ireland and all over the world. Although the flea is closing we really hope that the new energy that is out there, in the new generations of young people, artists, creatives and communities can be seen and heard by the powers that be. It is essential that this energy is nurtured and encouraged so that it can contribute and enrich the landscape of Dublin’s neighbourhoods. Although we will be moving on, our hearts will forever be full of the memories & joy that the Flea and it’s community gave us. We will update our website soon to be an archive of those special years so that the memories can live on and we endeavour to continue to advocate for markets in a city that is strongly lagging behind in terms of European Market Culture. For now we want to thank everyone who has ever visited, supported, traded, haggled, shopped, laughed, danced, hugged and been there with us through thick and thin. Thank you all for being there! We did a quick comparison on Friday for the weekend that’s in it, between the Dublin Flea Christmas Market (cancelled this year due to lack of venue and insufficient funding) and the proposed White Water Rafting facility for the IFSC, voted in last week by our Dublin City Councillors 37-19. The construction of this facility, to begin in 2020, is estimated to cost €23 million. It is forecast by year 5 to have a net annual revenue of €1.6 million, which after annual running costs will be reduced to a surplus of €789K. This means it will take 29 years just to recoup the initial investment, not to make a profit, just recoup the initial tax payers investment! What type of business plan is this!? It is also forecasts that by year 5, visitor numbers will be up to 37,000, (at a cost of €50 per head). Compare this to last year’s Dublin Flea Christmas Market which brought 73,000 visitors to the Dublin Docklands in just 8 days and had an estimated spend of €3.5 Million. This 3.5 million went directly into supporting Irish-based start-ups and small creative enterprises. The event was free to attend and promoted innovation, sustainability, community and regeneration. It showcased a unique side of Ireland and celebrated her rich craft and creative cultures. Something that tourists were and would be delighted to travel for. In a city that is gripped by a severe housing & worrying cultural crisis we need to wake up and act. This project is Dublin in a nutshell - it makes no sense and epitomises a culture of pure ‘fur coat and no knickers’ where we make grand gestures we can’t afford and ignore basic living needs. If you feel that Dublin Councillors need to act like we are in a crisis -scroll forward to see the list of Councillors who voted for this project - the very ones we voted in May of this year- who promised to represent us -the people of Dublin. If you disagree with the direction they voted and feel that the city should prioritise & redirect funds for affordable housing and municipal market & cultural spaces then write an email and tell them so. Find their contacts in a link included at the bottom of our Friday Facebook post- link in profile.
