In high school I remember taking public speaking to challenge myself to step out of the box, not realizing back then that I HAD stepped out the “box” of societal expectations for a kid a long time ago due to important situations. • It was throughout my childhood that I grew into speaking up even while being afraid because speaking up was not an option. • It came to a point where empowerment was existing and activism was a daily lifestyle because my rights and the rights of those I love were consistently put to risk/test. • It was seeing my mom and dads day to day be somehow figured despite language barriers and poverty stricken day to day reality. • Somehow they showed up daily, tired.. but somehow made it work. • So I grew into doing so out of instinct. No time to plan too much. It happened as a reflex to their strength - my mom building community throughout her difficulties hoping to help others through the difficulties she had encountered. • It was a consecutive unfolding of strength through hardship much too complex too process in the moment. • For this I give myself more grace now and those I love because affirmations exist within us without us even realizing it. • What is YOUR affirmation? • Recite this affirmation and/OR repost sharing a time when you felt empowered to make a difference.🌻🦋 #SelfLoveUprising @thebodyshopnorthamerica

When I was a teenager, I remember people making fun of me because I was Indigenous. . They would share their stereotypes and deliver microaggressions that over time caused deep pain and hurt. Like all teenagers, I just wanted to fit in, so I let go of all of the things that made me different, assimilating, like my Ancestors were forced to. . One day, I got really sick. Lupus woke me up to the fact that I had been turning away from all of these authentic parts of myself. . For all of these years, I had doubted that I was enough. Beautiful enough, smart enough, loveable enough. I began to heal slowly, every single day. Every day I looked in the mirror and stared at my Indigenous face. Every day I started loving it a little bit more, knowing that if I was going to heal, I had to meet my whole self with acceptance. . There are still days where I don’t feel enough in one way or another. On these days, I light my smudge and I sing our drum songs. I clear my mind, body and soul with practices that help me come back to my truth. . I share this Medicine with you today for any parts of your authentic self that you have turned away from. May these parts of you be welcomed back with grace. You are loved. . As we sit in circle with one another, honoring our differences, our unique identities and our gifts. .
