A L L C L E A R! ✨ The latest results from my annual mammogram means I’ve had FIVE years of cancer-free results. To be honest, my annual mammogram still requires a major effort to control my worries and nerves. On appointment day, one thing that perks me up is rocking a lippy. It’s my visible reminder of my inner strength. As someone who was diagnosed with another breast cancer not even two years after my first diagnosis, this clear mammo is a MAJOR milestone for me. Breast cancer, particularly in young women is aggressive. It’s why we’re monitored closely for 5-10 years after diagnosis. It’s why we’re forced to make decisions within dire timelines. Many of us have to give up our reproductive options to save ourselves. Frankly, many die and there’s no making sense of it. This marks five years of full-time hard work—reducing my risk for recurrence and keeping up with preventative maintenance— of learning how to trust my body, and learning how to thrive with medication that has awful side effects. Of accepting that I’ll never know the whys of my diagnosis or what exactly is keeping cancer away. I do my best and know that’s all I can do.
