It’s not exactly what you expect when you think of Bali, but did you know that the island is home to some pine forests? That’s right, up in the more mountainous regions like Kintamani, Bangli Regency, you’ll find pockets of pine forests in Bali thanks to the cooler climates and higher altitude. It does get quite cold, at least for tropical standards. You may see a few pines lining the lake banks, in the Bedugul Botanical Gardens or pine trees intermingled in the jungle terrains going up mountains like Gunung Abang, but a whole pine forest? You’ll find this very interesting alpine-like area in Manikliyu Village dense with pine trees, with the a bed of fallen pine needles cushioning the forest floor. There are some paths through the forest, but unfortunately they don’t necessarily lead to anywhere, they loop around back to where you began, but you can certainly take a cool stroll through this very different setting. Not the Bali you would imagine! This photogenic destination is popular for campers, walkers and, of course, wedding photography. Gebogan is brought individually to the temple by worshippers as offerings to the deities and ancestors. But it is during larger ceremonies that they are at their most impressive: the best time to see them is during the melasti cleansing rituals prior to Nyepi, Bali’s Day of Silence. All across the island, groups will travel from village temple to the sea or river in long processions known as mapeed. They bring their holy effigies to be cleansed, carried upon the heads of women, shaded under tedung ceremonial umbrellas. The vibrant gebogan offerings are much a part of this procession, adding colour and life to an already lively scene. The offerings are typically prepared by women, who carefully select the items to include in the Gebogan based on their colour, shape, and symbolic meaning. The structure of the Gebogan — a towering, cone-shaped structure — is made up of several layers, each of which is arranged in a specific order and contains a different set of items. The base layer is usually made up of fruits and vegetables, such as bananas, oranges, and cucumbers, which are arranged in a circular pattern. The second layer is often composed of flowers, such as frangipani, jasmine, and marigolds, which are arranged in a way that creates a beautiful and harmonious display of colors and shapes. Pura Dalem Jagaraga is found in the Sawan district of Buleleng Regency. It stands quietly on a village road, opposite a local elementary school. Surrounded by the area’s ‘everyday life’ — a local warung shop, a rice field canal, electricity wires overhead — it’s an easy spot to miss. Thus, unless you’re a history buff this isn’t exactly a tourist destination, but the temple has some intriguing features and a history to match. A local chronicler by the name of Ketut Suradnya took it upon himself to handwrite the history of the temple and its significance, now photocopied and handed out to visitors by his grandson. A charming touch to this humble site. This was back in 9 June 1848, when the Dutch colonists engaged in an armed conflict remembered as “Perang Jagaraga”, the Jagaraga War. Nearby, ‘Monumen Perang Jagaraga’ commemorates the fallen heroes of the battle, with the leaders Gusti Ketut Jelantik and Jro Jempiring immortalised as statues. To the surprise of many, rain handlers are common place in the ‘modern world’, so to speak. Whilst other types of shamans — like the balians who read one’s future or speak to spirits — are visited by a smaller group of believers, pawang hujan are accepted, welcomed and even sought-after by big businesses and five-star resorts! When a big outdoor event takes place, be it a party in a beachclub or a wedding, Bali’s rain handlers are called in. And what service do they offer exactly? It is their job to ensure that no rain falls upon an area for a certain of time. Yes, event organisers will have their pawang on speed dial. Whilst often called rain ‘stoppers’, this isn’t technically true. A pawang hujan’s ability actually entails moving the rain clouds (prior to it raining) away from a certain area, or indeed towards a certain area, say a farmer requires more rain. This is done through offerings, prayers and meditation. It is not so much their own power that shifts the clouds, but their ability to communicate with God and make this request. A pawang may have their own unique ritual. However, Jean Couteau shares his personal experience that sheds light on a different encounter within this nation. On 17 October many years ago, Jean Couteau arrived at School of Tourism to teach his usual class, only to discover a deserted and quiet parking lot. The atmosphere is subdued and serious, and the mystery unravels as he realizes that all the students and teachers have gathered before a podium adorned with a grand flagpole. Intrigued, he joins the teachers' assembly, unwittingly becoming part of an Indonesian flag-raising ceremony held on the 17 of each month. Engaging in military steps, reciting the Pancasila principles, and singing the national anthem Indonesia Raya. This reflection brings forth an epiphany about the nature of Indonesian nationalism, distinct from its European counterpart. The heart of Indonesian nationalism, is its inclusive and positive essence. It unites individuals of diverse backgrounds under the same destiny while respecting their ethnic identities. The symbolism of the sea as a unifying force, contrary to its role as a divider, is emphasized. Indonesia’s proclamation of independence happened on 17 August 1945, marking Indonesia's birth as a nation. At Bali Culture Workshop families can try their hand at making some of Bali’s very own arts and crafts! Located in Ubud, the classes on offer are run and taught by a family of multi-talented artists. Anything music related, such as the gamelan class, is taught by 12-year-old Surya, who has the passion and skill of a fully-fledged musician. Ibu Cokin is a retired dancer who travelled the globe in her early days, bringing the Balinese arts to an international spectacle. Pak Putra, her husband, is a man of many talents but all in all, is a professional dalang (puppeteer). His shadow puppet class is informative and insightful. Not only will you learn how to craft a wayang kulit but you will also learn about the intricate world of puppet theatre art in Indonesia. The class is intimate, usually hosting 1 to 2 people but welcomes groups of up to 8 guests. Wayang-making takes half, if not more, of your day (up to 8 hours), as it involves very careful sketching, carving, chiselling, and colouring. You’ll choose a character in a folklore to make but you also have the liberty to sketch your own drawing – people have opted for animals and nature. You’ll learn how to work with different chisels and tools to shape the character – Pak Putra will help you get the hang of it. If you feel stuck or tired, you can take a breather from the Wayang workshop and de-stress in a fun group activity. The popular Balinese dance, tari kecak is one you could go for; or take lessons from Surya and master the bamboo xylophone.
