During the COVID-19 lockdowns in India, Pravin had a chance conversation with his neighbor, a photographer who needed a website to help revive his business which had been affected by the lockdowns. “I was in the right place at the right time,” Pravin tells us. “It felt like I could make a difference in his life.” It was the perfect antidote to a stuck feeling he’d had. He wasn’t just stuck at home, but in his career. After receiving his undergrad in biology, he’d left college while earning his graduate degree in the same subject, when he realized it just wasn’t what he wanted. “Eight years had gone without a penny in my pocket,” he says. So he took a job as a medical copy editor to pay the bills. But it didn’t make him happy. When he wasn’t copy editing at home, he was absorbing hours of Angela Yu’s Web Development Bootcamp. He recalls the days in 2007 when, after school, he would play around with his Pentium 2 desktop and write websites on Notepad++. Yet, despite this early enthusiasm for making websites, he hadn’t considered computer science as a major. Many years later, online learning was making up for that. “This course kinda raised my brain sparks and it will stay there for the rest of my life,” he tells us. That chance conversation with his neighbor was also an opportunity for him to make a difference in his own. Reflecting back, he says, “it was neither a promotion or a job or career pivot. It was something more.” With the website under his belt, he was able to pick up enough freelance work that he could quit his job as a copyeditor. And speaking of conversations, he got to meet instructor Angela Yu, whom he admires as much for what she teaches as the empathetic way she does it. And he could tell her how much she has changed his life. “The best gift a student can give a teacher is accomplishing something with the skills they teach you.” He says. And best of all? He’s now using those skills to do something he loves. #AlwaysLearning

Who hasn’t had a bit of imposter syndrome, that feeling that you’re just not as good as you should be? That was the case with Shivay, who got his degree in economics but found his true calling with data and project management, becoming a Data APM. But his inner critic would always kick in when he was working on a solution to a problem. “If it was so obvious, they would have already implemented what you are thinking,” he recalls. Self-doubt was holding him back.
