Amar Singh Chamkila, The most selling Punjabi artist and an even more interesting lifetime. Imtiaz Ali, the famous director in his latest biopic revived Chamkila with a state of the art film starring Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra in the leading roles. The movie is no doubt one of the most unique movies based on Punjab and is worth mentioning as it clearly shows raw Punjab - in all it's beauty and spoils. The story of Punjab can be well personified in the character of Chamkila (Born Dhani Ram) who was born in a Chamar (so called lower caste) family and struggled to make a normal living where his father was a daily wage worker and he himself worked in the factories. No matter what we may say, even this blessed land of Gurus and Sufi Saints, the caste discrimination still haunts Punjab and even today many of us choose to stay blind on the ground level facts. Also the movie clearly reflects how in the dark days of Punjab terrorists and looteras haunted freedom of speech and the popular in Punjab as equally as the religious groups and the state forces. We lost many souls during that period - artistically famous ones as well like Avtar Singh Pash, Amarjyot and Amar Singh Chamkila who was murdered at the age of 27 by unidentified assassins. Well Punjab dared to find the ray of hope even in the darkest days via singers like Chamkila who even though were often criticised because of their smuttiness but were quite popular in the masses. Another worth mentioning fact from the movie is that all the scenes look exactly if they were shot in that era. The dressing of not only the main characters but even the audience of Chamkila's live akhadas looked as if were brought back from the gone era. Hats off to the team to even reviving the Punjabi artwork of Durrees, Khes, Kadai, Phulkari and old bedsheets and suits adding to the grace at the corners and stage backgrounds which was further stitched beautifully with excellent cinematography and folk songs sung by ladies and transgenders in Punjab. At present, Guru Yuvraj Singh is 17th in Direct Descent from Guru Ram Das The 4th Sikh Guru and was born on 25th of May 1994 and Ascended The GADDI on 1st of April 1995 at the age of ten months & five days only, as his father Guru Haresh Singh Abdicated The GADDI during his lifetime. Now Guru Yuvraj Singh is the Present GADDI NASHIN of Pothimala and the head of the Guru Har Sahai Sodhi Family. The Annual Mela of Pothimala is held on the New SAMMAT day every year when worshipers from all over India and as far as from Kabul & Kandhar used to visit the shrine and give their offerings to the Guru. Now, Guru Yuvraj Singhand family manages the Mela on his own. This place is home to some of the rare frescoes and traditional wood work of undivided Punjab. There are 3D and 4D frescoes of Lord Vishnu and incarnations Lord Krishna and Lord Rama, ancient chapters like Samundra Manthan, Lord Brahma, Lord Shiva, Nihang Singhs, Guru Nanak’s Life chapters (Udasis), Folk stories of Undivided Punjab - Heer Ranjha, Sohni Mahiwal. Sword Lily or Gladiolus, the state flower of Punjab is said to have travelled to the plains of Punjab from southern Africa via Iran and the old Persian plains. The name of Sword Lily comes from it's sword like petals. In Punjab, many farmers have started harvesting this to be sold to flower shops and wedding decorators, I'm not sure how much of it do we still have in the wild. The birthplace of the Holi legend strangely lies across the border, in Multan, Pakistan. The origins of this festival can be found in the Puranic tale about a prince called Prahlada, whose devotion to the God Vishnu angers his demon father Hiranyakashyap to such an extent that he tries to kill his son multiple times. The god Vishnu intervenes every time and protects his ardent devotee from the wrath of his father. In one such failed attempt, Prahlad is made to sit on the lap of his paternal aunt (another demoness called Holika) in a bonfire. The trick is that the evil Holika would be protected by her magical non inflammable shawl, while her nephew perishes in the fire. However, Lord Vishnu intervenes and blows strong winds. The magical shawl falls over Prahlad, protecting him and destroying his aunt Holika. Thus the Holi legend is born. Prahlad later became the king of Multan (then called Kashyapuri) and built a temple in honor of Lord Vishnu. Prahladpuri Temple, as it is called, was destroyed and rebuilt over centuries until it was abandoned forever with the partition of India in 1947. In 1992, the temple was completely destroyed by a mob acting in retaliation to the Babri Masjid demolition in India, putting a final end to a tradition of over five millennia.
