After making this video, I wanted to keep this part short but the more that I type this out the more I can feel the emotions flowing through my fingertips. My skin color has always been a weird subject for me to grasp, because I never really fit in where I grew up, especially being a black Trinidadian-American kid and going to schools that were predominately white. Kids in my classes would constantly remind me that I didn’t look like them, saying things to me that no kid should ever hear. They would say things like my opinion didn’t matter because I was black, or plain just saying racial slurs almost everyday. Even small things, when the teachers would turn off the lights to watch a movie kids would say “hey where did Jared go?” Being a quiet kid at the time; I never said anything to them, but I hated that shit. I never really knew why people would mention my skin color so much, it made me feel like I wasn’t a normal person. It happened so often I just assumed that’s what the world was like. Being called a“f*cking n*gger”, or hearing “who cares, you’re nothing cause you’re black” and other racial slurs in school (almost everyday) as a kid… it fucks you up. Growing up, and hearing that you’re nothing all the time, that you’re less than human, you start to believe it. It causes you to feel like being yourself isn’t good enough, when it should be the minimum. It really affected the way I socialized and interacted with people, to the point I’d just avoid any sort of interaction completely, especially in high school. It wasn’t until I moved to LA and got more in touch with who I was, and found out that a lot of the world plainly just does not like black people. Our people are considered the bottom of the barrel, hated and feared by most. It's something that I’ve known for myself, but never really saw it onto others that looked like me until a friend of mine put it into words. I realized that most white people don’t understand the way that we feel because people can’t see pain unless they can see the scars. Since then, coming to learn that we’re seen as a disease in the eyes of most, it hurt a lot. (CONTINUES BELOW)
