In her own words: “My name is MUTUYIMANA DJAMILA, Let me share my story with you. I am 20 years old, I have a handsome boy of 3 years. I am the first born in my family. When I was a baby of 2 weeks I was in a fire and I lost my arm. After losing my arm, my dad went away, and I was left with my mum, who was very stressed because of staying alone. After some time my mum was with another man, but life with him was complicated. I did not have the love of my parents. My mother had other 3 kids in the hardest situation. My father had another wife with other kids, but today is arrested in Rwamagana prison and he is condemned all his life. I helped my mother to take care of my siblings so I was not able to even finish primary school. I found a young man, I thought he would be a good one and give me the love that I didn’t ever meet, but with him it was even more bad than before!!! I was pregnant with his baby but he went away, and I was struggling alone with my boy and my mum’s husband put me out of his house! Today’s guest is the founder of Safi Life, a non-profit dedicated to female advancement in Africa. **Preview here, Full episode at link in bio ** Devon Ogden’s focus on devoting her life to how she can help others is remarkable, and she explains it is her daily motivation. She joins me from her home in California, where she somehow finds a way to balance career, motherhood, and running an international nonprofit! She studied Rwanda for her thesis degree, going there and working with survivors of genocide through theater therapy, and her work spurred a passion for helping women in Africa. The name ‘Safi Life’ came from her collaborator in Africa, an inspiring woman named Safi. The women Safi Life helps become businesswomen, and therefore help shift their communities and culture in a positive direction. Time to check in — we are officially back to school in #Rwanda! Covid restrictions have partially lifted and our Safi Life school of 50 vulnerable women, many being hardworking single mothers as shown here with her two babies, have begun their studies. We are paying close attention to all government regulations and wearing clean masks daily.
