Founded in 2009, Kolkata-based Kadam Haat is an eco-friendly products enterprise. Kadam Haat was founded by Payal Nath. After earning a degree in physics from Delhi University, she delved into the world of footwear design and undertook a short-term course at the Footwear Design and Development Institute. Her journey took a significant turn when she relocated to Kolkata post-marriage. Engaging with projects under the Export Promotion Council of Handicrafts (EPCH), Payal traversed regions like Kashmir, Mizoram, and Manipur, where she encountered clusters of artisans working with natural fibers. Recognizing the potential to uplift these artisans' productivity and economic status, she laid the foundation for the Kadam Foundation in 2006, training over 10,000 artisans in crafting eco-friendly products from grass. In 2009, Kadam Haat was established to help artisans market their products. The platform focuses on marketing the artisans' creations and providing sustainable livelihoods in West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar, Kashmir, and Uttar Pradesh. The brand specializes in hand-weaving sustainable bags, home decor, and various items using nine types of grasses, contributing to the economic empowerment of artisans, of whom approximately 85% are women. Following the Covid pandemic, Kadam Haat Basketry Barn Private Limited (KHBBPL) underwent a deliberate rebranding in 2022. Distinctively, Kadam Haat emphasizes a decentralized production model, with artisans hand-weaving products from natural fibers at their homes. Selling on Amazon, Pepperfry, and their own website, the product portfolio includes various items such as roti boxes, jewelry boxes, bowls, trays, laptop sleeves, and bags. According to 30 Stades, In FY22-23, this version recorded annual revenues of nearly Rs 2 crore, with a projected 2.5-fold increase to Rs 5 crore in FY23-24. Payal envisions establishing India's first global fibrecraft brand, showcasing the untapped potential of grass as both a raw material and a livelihood source. Currently catering to domestic demand and the B2C market, Kadam Haat has aspirations for global expansion. Website - www.kadamhaat.com/ #startuppedia #ecofriendly

Founded in 1991 in Rajkot, Gujarat, Gopal Snacks Limited is a success story rooted in the entrepreneurial journey of Bipin Hadvani. Having migrated from Bhadra village, Hadvani co-founded the snacks business in 1990, driven by his father's valuable advice: "Jyada paisa kamana hai to daam nahin business badao.” After completing his schooling in 1990, Hadvani's entrepreneurial spirit led him to Rajkot, where he joined hands with a relative to start a small namkeen venture after taking Rs 4,500 from his father. However, differing business styles pushed Hadvani to strike out on his own in 1994, founding Gopal Snacks with his wife, Daxaben. The early years were challenging as Gopal Snacks faced brand loyalty issues in the traditional Gujarati snacks market. Hadvani, determined to succeed, revisited his roots. He cycled across Rajkot, interacting with market stakeholders, refusing to compromise on product quality, and refraining from price hikes. By 1998, sales began to rise. In an attempt to scale up, a manufacturing plant was established outside the city, but logistical challenges forced a shift in strategy in 2008. Gopal Snacks rebranded and opened a new unit within the city. The move proved successful, with revenue reaching ₹100 crore in FY12 and surging to ₹620.81 crore in FY17. According to Entrepreneur India, Gopal Snacks recorded a turnover of Rs 1,129 crore in FY21 and Rs 1,356 crore in FY22. In FY23, they recorded a turnover of Rs 1,401 crore. Despite initial reluctance to enter the chips market, Hadvani diversified the product line in response to competition. Gopal Snacks now boasts an array of offerings, including Cristos (wafers), chips, corn snacks, pellets, spices, flour, and even washing bars. With 7 plants across Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan, the brand offers over 84 product choices and 250 stock-keeping units (SKUs), catering to 9 Indian states, with a network of 750 dealers and 7 lakh retailers. Gopal Snacks also exports to over 70+ countries, producing a staggering 1 crore pack a day. Gopal Snacks is now the second-largest player in the Gujarat market after Balaji. Founded in 2012 and based in Chennai, Proklean is a green chemistry company that produces biochemicals that are not just eco-friendly but also effective solutions for various industries. Proklean was founded by Chandrasekhar B, Dr. Sivaram Pillai, and Vishwadeep Kuila. Chandrasekhar is an IIM Ahmedabad alumnus, who previously had his own leather manufacturing company in Chennai. Sivaram, with a background from the University of Madras, has a PhD in Biochemistry, and has held significant leadership roles in biotechnology firms. They crossed paths 11 years ago, introduced by a mentor while coincidentally reading the same book on probiotics in Chennai. Combining their expertise and shared commitment to reducing the adverse effects of cleaning solutions in the market they founded Proklean in 2012, collaborating with Vishwadeep (Vishy), Chandrasekhar's fellow batchmate who was also an early client driven by the same passion and conviction. Vishy brought in the much-needed branding and go-to-market strategy in the beginning days. Thus began the Proklean story. Initially targeting the leather industry, they expanded to paper and textiles, replacing environmentally harmful chemicals with their proprietary probiotic and bio-based technology The journey faced a significant setback in December 2015 when Chennai experienced devastating floods, washing away nine months of production. Despite grappling with insurance challenges and months without salaries, they persevered and emerged stronger. Proklean's unique technology platforms found success across Leather, Textile, Pulp & Paper, Water Management, Institutional Cleaning, Biosurfactants, and Consumer Products. The products outperform chemical alternatives while prioritizing natural resources and reducing pollution. In 2019, a younger team joined the ranks, initiating a scaling-up phase. In FY23, the company achieved an annual revenue rate of Rs 45 Cr, with a projected increase to Rs 60 Cr in FY24, Chandrasekhar told Startup Pedia. In the next 2 years, Proklean aims to attain a revenue milestone of Rs 100 Cr, expand its export profile, and venture into serving newer industries. Website - www.proklean.in

Founded in 2011, Life Exotics, managed by Varkey George, has emerged as a thriving agricultural venture situated in Kombai, Theni, Tamil Nadu, spanning an expansive 170 acres. Varkey George is a postgraduate in electrical engineering from the University of Texas who transitioned from a successful six-year job stint in the United States to embrace his familial roots in agriculture. Having grown up on his ancestral farm in Kootickkal, Kerala, Varkey faced a pivotal decision upon returning to India. The farm, initially cultivated for traditional crops like vegetables and coconuts, posed challenges with stagnant prices and escalating input and labor costs. Recognizing the unsustainability of this model, Varkey shifted gears towards exotic fruit cultivation, introducing a diverse range on his Kombai farm. Faced with declining prices of traditional crops like coconuts and vegetables, Varkey strategically delved into high-value crops, piloting projects with tropical fruits like rambutan and mangosteen, yielding impressive results. Presently, the Life Exotics farm showcases a cultivation repertoire that includes longans across three acres, Meyer lemons and grapefruit spanning seven acres, and passion fruit covering six acres. Additionally, a pilot plantation of 30 avocado plants augurs well for the future. To augment soil fertility, Varkey integrates exotic fruit cultivation with traditional crops like coconut, mangoes, chickoo, pomegranate, and vegetables, ensuring a diverse mix of micronutrients. Varkey amalgamates internet resources with traditional wisdom for optimal farming methodologies. According to 30 Stades, passion fruit yielded around 30 tonnes last year on Varkey’s farm, fetching an average of Rs 75-85 per kg and generating an income of Rs 4.25 lakh per acre. Varkey's commitment to excellence extends to the pricing strategy, with avocados priced between Rs 300 to Rs 400 per kg, longans and grapefruit expected to be sold at Rs 330 per kg, and Meyer lemons retailing at Rs 330-Rs 350 per kg. The revenues from exotic fruit cultivation consistently outpace traditional crops, boasting a three to fourfold increase. #startuppedia #farming

On January 13, 2024, Artifact, the news aggregation app founded by Instagram co-founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, announced it would shut down. The app was launched in January 2023 and used AI to suggest news to users. The company said the decision to "wind down operations" was due to a lack of market opportunities and user engagement. Artifact will begin disabling features over the next few weeks, starting with the ability to make new posts and comments. Existing posts will remain visible for a short time while the team works to reduce moderation needs. The app will be fully shut down by the end of February. The startup announced via a blog post that it had decided to shut down. "We have built something that a core group of users love, but we have concluded that the market opportunity isn't big enough to warrant continued investment in this way," Systrom wrote. "We live in an exciting time where artificial intelligence is changing just about everything we touch, and the opportunities for new ideas seem limitless," he said. As per news reports, since its launch a year ago, Artifact has introduced numerous enhancements, such as AI-driven article summaries, the option to comment on and flag articles as clickbait, and a Twitter-like posting feature. Unfortunately, the implementation of these latter features needed significant moderation, overwhelming Artifact's small team of 8 members, who were unable to provide adequate support. #startuppedia #instagram #startupfounder
