After 100 years of speculation surrounding his fate, the partial remains of Andrew Comyn “Sandy” Irvine are believed to have been discovered on the Central Rongbuk Glacier below the North Face of Mount Everest. Irvine vanished while attempting to conquer the world’s tallest peak in 1924, along with climbing partner and renowned mountaineer George Mallory. The mystery of whether they reached the summit before their deaths has intrigued climbers and historians for decades. “Any expedition to Everest follows in the shadow of Irvine and Mallory,” said @jimmychin, who made the discovery with climbers and filmmakers @erichroepke and @therealmarkfisher while filming for an upcoming @natgeodocs project. "Sometimes in life the greatest discoveries occur when you aren’t even looking. In 2019, Edith and Sébastien Pelletier’s lives were overturned: three of their four young children were diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa, a rare and irreversible eye disorder that usually leads to blindness. The disease affects approximately one in 4,000 people in the U.S. and is the leading cause of visual disability in those under 60. In response, the Pelletiers embarked on a global journey to create lasting visual memories for their children before the condition progressed. I could see the comet with the naked eye, but these images revealed so much more. On the prime viewing nights of October 12 and 13, when the comet is closest to Earth and notably bright, it will be visible over a clear western horizon an hour after sunset. It's best to look for it away from large cities, because of their light pollution. The bright moon on the evenings of October 15-18 will impact the visibility of the comet. Although it will be rapidly fading from October 19 to 20, the comet will still be interesting to watch or photograph during the dark window between dusk and moonrise later in the evening. A severe geomagnetic storm on October 10, following an Earth-directed solar eruption, brought aurora down to mid-latitudes and even as far south as the tropics.
