Úrsula Hilaria Celia de la Caridad Cruz Alfonso was born in Cuba, 95 years ago today and started singing before she was a year old. As Celia Cruz, she graduated from winning amateur talent competitions to singing in Havana’s top clubs and joining the latin dance band and Cuban institution, La Sonora Matancera, before exile in the USA, where she became known as “The Queen of Latin Music”. ⁠ Although at ease in a variety of Afro-cuban styles, she gained worldwide fame as a salsa singer. In 1974, she performed on the same bill as James Brown, Miriam Makeba and Sister Sledge at the extraordinary Zaire 74 music festival in Kinshasa that accompanied the “Rumble In The Jungle” title fight between boxers Muhammad Ali and George Foreman. ⁠ Her last hit, released two years before she died in 2003 aged 77, was called "La Negra Tiene Tumbao" ("The Black Woman's Got Style"). The 2020 World Series begins today following a regular season shortened by the COVID-19 pandemic. Welcoming back @gettyimagesgallery curator @shawn_waldron, sharing highlights from the collection with us each Saturday.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ With Fashion Weeks around the world in full swing, we look back at a classic fashion image shot by famed British photographer Bill Brandt for Picture Post. Brandt studied under Man Ray in the artist’s Paris studio in 1929 before returning to England in 1931. Throughout the 1930s and ‘40s, he produced his own books and personal work as well as photojournalism for Picture Post, Lilliput, Weekly Illustrated and others. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Brandt was regularly assigned fashion stories by PP, including this image from a 1949 story titled ‘Thoughts on Necks’. Written by Marjorie Beckett, it reported on the fashion world’s current focus on the neckline. The black georgette dress worn here, embroidered with silver and gold, was designed by Pierre Balmain. The @gettyarchive would like to say a huge thank you to the photographer David Fenton, @dfenton1, for today's takeover giving us his personal account of the Chicago 7 trial and the defendants. ⁠ ⁠ ⁠"I especially loved Abbie Hoffman, who was among the funniest and most talented activists ever. He would blow kisses to the jury, and the Judge, also hilariously named Hoffman, would say "the jury is to disregard the kiss from defendant Hoffman." I especially loved it the day Abbie Hoffman and Jerry Rubin came to trial dressed in long, black Judicial robes. When Judge Hoffman ordered them to take the robes off, they were prepared — underneath, they were dressed as Chicago cops. ⁠ I can’t wait to see Aaron Sorkin’s film of the Chicago 7 on Netflix. Following the release of the film 'The Trial of the Chicago 7', we continue our takeover with Photographer David Fenton, @dfenton1 , providing us here with an insight into life in the courtroom during the trail of the Chicago 7.⁠ ⁠ "5 of the 7 were convicted, and all were also sentenced to prison for "contempt of court." Judge Hoffman sentenced Abbie to 8 months literally for "laughing in court!" All of this was reversed on appeal, vindicating their first amendment rights to protest. ⁠ ⁠As for Bobby Seale, I shall never forget the day the Judge ordered him to be bound and gagged in the courtroom to shut him up from demanding to represent himself. Suddenly, I saw someone jump over several rows of spectator seats and land squarely on one of the big, burly Federal Marshalls who was restraining Seale. A huge melee broke out in the courtroom. This was the first time I had ever even been in a court, so it was quite an introduction!"⁠ ⁠ Seen here, the Chicago 7 lawyers Leonard Weinglass and William Kunstler. Continuing with today's takeover, photographer David Fenton, @dfenton1, talks us through a selection of his shots taken during the trial of the Chicago 7 in 1969. ⁠ ⁠ "The Chicago 7 turned the tables on the government, putting the war in Vietnam on trial for the whole country to see. Each night, we would all watch the Walter Cronkite CBS Evening News together to get “our reviews,” that is, to see how the trial was covered on the news that night. It was courtroom drama as radical media agitprop. And it was so much fun to be with these brilliant, irreverent, and very brave people. I mean, they faced huge amounts of jail time for organizing peaceful protests! Charged with "conspiracy to incite a riot," when as was well documented, the only rioters were the police themselves who mercilessly beat up demonstrators at the Democratic National Convention in 1968." ⁠ ⁠ Watching the Evening News at the Chicago 7 defense office.
