Use self assessment tickets to intentionally engage students and make them a part of the learning process. 👏🏻 Use self assessment tickets when you’re teaching new skills. They can be used for any content area. ❤️ State the learning goal at the beginning of your lesson and ask students to rate their level of understanding before you start the lesson. Teach your lesson and then at the end, restate your learning goal and ask students to self assess their understanding. 🥰 Students should complete an independent practice that matches the learning goal and then staple their ticket to their work. I got this idea from my mom, who recently retired after 38 years in education! Include a small notecard in your B2S information packets to parents/guardians can write a note to their child. Tell families to write their notes with words of affection and encouragement and to leave the notecard on top of or inside their desks. When students arrive the next day, they’ll be so happy to see a note from a loved one. Make sure to account for every student, though! Sometimes families aren’t able to attend night functions, so make sure you write your student a note or have your administrator, team teacher, or another staff member write a note for the student. I put this bulletin board up at my sons’ school, but I didn’t have enough room for my original large G O A L S letters 😫. So…I improvised! 🤗 I decided to make smaller letters and added a piece of construction paper underneath each letter for students to write on instead. I always loved putting this board up at the beginning of the school year for the students at my school. ❤️ I’m not in the classroom this year, so I was so excited when I was able to display it at my sons’ school. This board is a great way to get students thinking about their goals for the new year and it’s also fun to interact with each other on a bulletin board. Something I did to accompany the Wrinkled Heart idea was to use it with a story I wrote called “Troy’s Bad Day.” Here’s how I taught it: 👇🏻 I read the story to my students as they sat on our reading carpet and listened. For the first read aloud, I asked students to listen and try to identify the problems the main character, Troy, was having. After reading it, I asked for volunteers to share their ideas and I wrote them on an anchor chart. I read the story a second time, and this time, I told my students that we would pause and fold a piece of the paper heart every time something negative happened to Troy. I modeled it first and thought out loud as I folded the heart. My students soon caught on and raised their hand every time they heard a problem and told me we needed to fold the heart. At the end of the story, students saw the heart was small and folded. We talked about what that meant for Troy. Again, I wrote students’ ideas on the anchor chart. We slowly unfolded the heart and I asked students what they noticed about it. We talked about the folds and what it symbolizes for someone’s actual feelings. We talked about the idea that you can really leave a negative impression on someone’s heart with your unkind words and actions. We talked about the actions of the other characters and how it contributed to Troy’s wrinkled heart. We read the story a third time, and this time we came up with ideas on what the other characters and Troy could have done to make things better. I also wrote their ideas on the chart. When we were done, each student got a smaller paper heart and they wrote one thing they could do to make a positive impact in someone’s life. This is a great first week of school activity that can help you start to build a positive classroom culture.
