We've been a little quiet on IG lately for a good reason. Besides popping up at weekend markets to meet new friends, I've been working hard on making soap making not just a cause to advocate sustainability for our planet, but also a passion turned career that I can do sustainably for the long run. Soaps and oils are heavy, and the past few years of carrying ingredients to the soap studio and soaps back home and to pop ups had taken a toll on my back and knees. Space to store and pack soaps was also running tight. It came to a point that the only way to keep doing what I love needs to be done differently. Thanks to the encouragement of many, here I am, in my own cosy (aka tiny) haven for crafting @mynakedbar soaps. It’s seems a while since I’ve had a ‘free’ Sunday without a pop up market and I actually felt a little lost this morning after I woke up. Definitely not a good sign and I have a renewed determination to get my life more balanced and perhaps revisit other hobbies besides soapmaking. Chanced upon this picture taken two years back which put me in a little reflective mood. If I remember right, this was taken just before I retired them as my ‘working station’ for packing orders. Nope I don’t make soap on this table since cold process soaps are handmade but can’t be homemade in Singapore context. In SG, cold process soaps can only be made in locations that hold a proper NEA permit, a fact that surprised many people I spoke with at pop ups as most thought our soaps are made at home. This Little Tikes table and chair set were once used by my kids when they were toddlers and they came in really handy when I needed an extra space at home to cut up milk cartons and pack the soaps. Perhaps it seemed like a strange choice but boy, after so many years, the set remains really sturdy and actually comfortable to work on and I was actually grateful we still had them. I’ve never been one that is ambitious and I made sure I stay grounded to why I started the label and also never to take the joy out of soap making. Thanks to the support of many who believed in our journey, we had been able to grow slowly but steadily, largely via word of mouth. As we continue our organic growth to ripple our sustainable message, the question of how to do so sustainably (not just for our planet but for ourselves) is something on my mind for a while. This is too good to just be enjoyed by myself alone so holding my phone in one hand, here’s #behindthescenes of the making of our Dead Sea Celtic Salt bar. We can’t decide if we love that initial smoooooothness of the soap batter or that #asmr audio of bubbles bursting better. Which one do you like more? I formulated this bar with turmeric, Bentonite clay, Dead Sea clay, apricot kernel oil, avocado oil and Celtic sea salt with #psoriasiswarrior in mind but this fab bar can be used by anyone who loves a good gentle exfoliation and a cooling shower on a hot day. On days when you don’t feel like having an exfoliation, you can lather the bar in your hands and just shower using it like a regular cold process bar. Since the bar contains salt, even though fine grain, can sometimes be rough so do exfoliation in circular motions gently without pressing the bar into the skin. This is a blog I wanted to pen for a while and finally forced myself to sit down and do it for #worldeczemaday today. Many of us have friends or family who suffer from the condition or may be #eczemawarriors ourselves. This is a chronic condition that is not contagious #youcanholdmyhand but when severe can drastically impact one’s daily lifestyle or mental health. The bad news is, there’s no cure for the condition. However there are steps eczema patients can take to manage the flares and lengthen interval between them. Eczema hit me during adulthood and at the peak of my worst flare, I could not even touch water. Thankfully, I’ve learnt to manage it better now. Hence in this blog, I hope to share some of my own learning as well as the role that cold process soaps played to help me in my recovery process. Sometimes I wonder if there’s a bigger reason why I had taken up soap making as a passion career besides advocating for our planet. I’m not a medical doctor nor a dermatologist and everyone’s trigger and skin condition is different so there’s no one size fits all solution, but I’m hoping this sharing can help someone who may not yet have this information.
