So here are three completely achievable small space compost options for you: 1. Try out a worm farm, either a small compact unit you keep indoors or an inground DIY bucket system. These are a fab option if you live somewhere without a yard, as you can position the worm bucket (drilled with holes) in a large pot & keep it in a common area in an apartment block or on your balcony if you have one. Having a worm farm connected to the soil makes the management a lot easier.  2. Give a Bokashi bin a go, they’re a life saver for composting in houses or apartments with little to no outdoor space. This is because Bokashi bins harness the power of good bacteria to ferment your food, making them an absolute ace up the sleeve of the space poor gardener.  Bokashi composting systems are compact in size & very clean to use & therefore can be kept inside, if need be. This is a game changer for those of us who don’t have access to a garden. Compost is not just a pile of inert scraps sitting in a forgotten back corner of your yard. It is a living, breathing system that supports a complex web of microbes and organisms. All the life buzzing around your compost bin is hard working & hungry. Like all life on earth your compost needs air to “breathe”, water to “drink” & a balanced diet of “Greens” & “Browns”. So let’s break down the composting requirements to keep it breaking down efficiently & smelling fab.   The four universal compost ingredients; nitrogen (the juicy “green” stuff), carbon (the dead, dry “brown” stuff), oxygen & water.    💚Nitrogen - these are your food scraps & green garden waste, coffee grounds and manure. (Aim to add 40% of these ingredients) 🤎Carbon - these come in the form of brown leaves, dried hay or straw, wood chips, cardboard, paper etc. (Balanced your compost with 60% Carbon ingredients) 💦Water - Compost needs around 40-60% hydration. When you grab a handful of it you should be able to squeeze one or two drop of liquid out. Any more than this & it is too wet, any less & decomposition will slow. 🌬Oxygen - Compost is an aerobic process & needs plenty of air to function correctly. So give it a turn regularly. Read this post to learn some simple regenerative gardening practices that can be used in your own backyard to restore & rejuvenate your soil:   🌱A fundamental principle of regenerative gardening is to never allow soil to go fallow & instead keep it protected with cover crops that act as a living mulch. When plants cover the soil it stops it from degrading, drying out & disappearing & soil microorganisms can thrive.    🌱Soil is a living ecosystem & just like us wearing a hat & sunscreen in summer & a woolly jumper & scarf in winter, our soil needs protection from the weather too. Planting densely & growing living mulches (plants that act as a ground cover) helps to: ✅lower the temperature of the soil in summer & protect it from cold nights in winter too ✅suppress weeds better than dead mulch material like hay or wood chips 🌱Grow green manures in off seasons to repay your soil for its hard work producing hungry edible plants. You can plant different crops depending upon the season like rye, peas, oats, or legumes. Make sure these plants don’t go to flower; cut them back before they do & chop & drop the plant materials to feed your soil. 🌱If your soil is not covered with plants, then apply dried mulch like hay, pea straw, lucerne or wood chips (only use wood chips around ornamental plants or on garden paths, not around your edible plants), or even more simply rake up & use leaf litter on your beds. 🌱Finally, don’t forget to feed your soil with homemade compost & castings.
