Filed in the US District Court of Western Tennessee on Wednesday, the civil lawsuit alleges that the brutal beating of Nichols by Memphis police officers in the department’s “hyper-aggressive” specialized unit was sanctioned and tolerated by the MPD, the police chief, and the city. Five men have been charged in connection with a drugging and robbery scheme that preyed on patrons of Manhattan gay bars and resulted in at least two deaths, officials announced Tuesday. Prosecutors say that the group of men conspired to approach people outside bars or clubs and offer them drugs that were used to incapacitate them. The men would then steal the victims’ phones and credit cards, or make cash transfers via apps, while their victims were either unconscious or, in the case of two men, dead. “We want to send a message to the LGBTQ community: We understand the trauma you experienced during this time,” Mayor Eric Adams told reporters at a news conference. Four members of an elite cheerleading team in Oak Ridge North were at an H-E-B grocery store parking lot in Elgin when one of them accidentally got into what she thought was her car, ABC 13 reported. She realized her mistake when she saw a man sitting in the passenger seat and went back to her friend's car as the man exited the vehicle too, Lynne Shearer, the owner of Woodlands Elite Cheer Company, told KVUE. Shearer said the girl then rolled down her window to apologize, and the man pulled out a gun. The girls panicked and started to drive off when the man fired at the car, striking two of them, Shearer told KVUE. Deadline reported that Majors was dropped by his longtime managers three weeks after the star was arrested in New York on March 25 for an altercation involving a 30-year-old woman, who was taken to hospital with minor injuries to her head and neck. The publication claims that the decision to part ways with the actor was due to his personal behavior. Alongside losing management, Majors’s public relations firm, the Lede Company, quietly parted ways with him last month, according to Variety. In Instagram videos now being reposted by fellow runners and marathon fans, many called out the disproportionate and racist policing, as the mainly Black Pioneers Run Crew was encircled by more than 12 police officers, barricading them in from the street and watching them from behind on motorcycles. Cheer squad member Asia Rawls said she overheard one of the officers telling an onlooker: “You’re gonna get arrested if you don’t do what I say.” The running club had set up a cheer zone to support runners as they hit the notoriously difficult 21st mile of their 26.2-mile trek. At the Capitol, Tennessee Rep. Justin Jones passed through initial security carrying the baby-size casket, but security stopped him from bringing it onto the House floor. At one point, WREG reported, he passed it off to Rep. Justin Pearson, his colleague who was also expelled and reinstated after protesting for gun control. Jones told MSNBC he wanted to "put pressure" on Tennessee Republicans to put the interests of the people over NRA contributions. Protesters also marched from McKendree United Methodist Church to the state Capitol to protest HB 1202, which would make it easier for teachers to carry firearms at school. According to a statement from the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner, the cause of death for the 34-year-old singer was determined to be drowning due to the effects of Xanax and difluoroethane, which is an aerosol propellant found in spray cans.
