Edible cover crops offer early food for spring gardeners. When you allow your late season veggie plants to seed out and overwinter, they are the first to come up when the ground is warm enough in the spring. The best cover crops are the ones that you already have growing and the ones that grow easily and vibrant in your bioregion. The life and times of the Mothership ….

When you have many different pollinating flowers blooming at different times in the season, this creates food for insects throughout the entire year or season. Different size pollen feeds different size insects. Not only is a exciting requirement to be DEM Pure Certified to have lots of pollinator plants, It is so important to have many pollinators around to feed on the unbeneficial pests that inevitably come into any garden or farm. The nature balance is the key to natural farming. We have flower gardens next to every food or medicine garden or greenhouse. Dragonfly Earth Medicine Farm Hugelkulture Squash Patch Beds! This is a perfect example of how you can grow 1,000 lbs of squash in a 1st year bed on rock hard ground. Winter squash is a fabulous crop to keep through winter. Squash is loaded with vitamins and minerals and a great caloric food that can just be put in the oven. It can be made into sweet pies, savory curries, or just with butter and salt. We feed our winter squash to our animals and us and it lasts us into May!! This patch is just layers of sticks and dimensional ends and bark on the bottom. Then, lots of weeds, biomass cold compost piles and our neighbor’s cow manure. Then we piled soil on top is from the aisles we dig out each year. These photos show the progression of this garden and what is possible from just layering greens (fresh biomass, fresh manure, chicken manure from our coop, fresh kitchen compost) and browns (sticks, fall leaves, duff, and cold land compost). We live on a Rocky Mountainside and all soil for every garden has been made by layering on top of the ground. Many of our gardens have 2ft deep soils in just 3-4 years. Making Closed Loop Fermented Teas on Dragonfly Farm! Herbalism for your gardens. It has always been our mission to create self reliant farms around the world. Making teas 100% from local materials has always made sense to us. No need for sugars or other imported items. Just use local soils and leaf duff from multiple local sources, and combine with chopped weeds and pruning from your polyculture land. Often nettles, ganja, comfrey, local grasses and roots are our best land ally’s. We set up 2 tanks. 1 for open fermentation. 1 for aeration. We can set up an open fermentation and use it within 7 days, then strain and aerate over night activating and oxygenating the fermented tea. We can fill and continue the process all year and even for multiple years. In the fall we “mulch” a large layer to the top of the tea for a long term cold ferment. We have used sunflower heads, peonies, marigolds, elderberries everything under our sun it just depends on season and what needs tea. Often we just use the teas for the trees and food gardens. The cannabis gardens often have such an intentional soil build and it is best for the ganja to be mostly water only. There are so many other parts of the farm that can use teas and they are fun to make!! DEM style #JahDem since 1999!

Soil blockers!! By using Native Living Soil at the very beginning of a cycle creates a relationship between the microbiology and the plant’s endophytic system. This relationship is important because it sets the health and well-being for the plant’s entire life cycle and gives it the information it needs to thrive into a powerful sentient being. This mix is half coco coir half garden soil and dusted with Lush Roots Mycorrhizal Fungi. Using inert coco coir as a medium with native soil helps the plants recognize a environment that it wants to thrive in. The best way to clone with this mix and method is fill the bottom of the tray half way full. Then add more water to the mix, and use the soil blockers to make “soil blocks”. Then, Tuck the bottom of the blocks into the soil bed, place the stem of the plant into the block. Take a deep breath and give your your well wishes to these valuable magical plants, they are here to bring us health. All of the spongy peat pucks and rapid rooters are not approved for use in organic agriculture because they contain formaldehyde 😳. It is essential life to give the plants a “natural birth” and a regenerative life🥰 words cannot express the love we have for being a part of this amazing first interaction.
