During our Mandela Washington Fellowship we did something called "Ignite Talk". In a video of maximum five minutes, fellows were tasked to call their audience to action about a burning issue in their minds. A male colleague from Drake University spoke about "African Masculinity". Oh that got me! We spent a live session discussing this. It got us all popped up! Several angles and stories came up. The discussion was insightful. The "African definition of masculinity" is affecting many homes and relationships. Many men want to express their love to their women in certain ways but are scared of "what would people say?" Or "how would the public perceive me? As less than a man?" To a point where men can't proudly, publicly make known that they are loyal to their spouse. Because if they do, other men (and even women) will mock them for being faithful to one woman. Society has made it seem unmanly for a man to be faithful, very loving and sweet to his woman. Or to even do Public Display of Affection/Emotion. Seeing this photo of one of Sierra Leone's star footballers, #musatombo made my day! The boldness of an African brother to express his love to his woman; regardless of who will say what or what anyone will think of his masculinity - amazing!!! I got goosebumps. Mandela Washington Fellowship 2021 - the Pandemic Cohort! When I applied, I never imagined this much to happen to me. The email notification of my selection made my day and my week. I was proud of myself. We were selected in 2019 and were to travel in 2020. #youngleaders The Mandela Washington Fellowship; under the Young African Leaders Initiative by the United States Government; is aimed at further empowering young African leaders with leadership knowledge. We are trained to be servant leaders. #ubuntu This is so that we take up leadership boldly and effect positive change in our continent. Previous cohorts traveled to the United States of America. For us, the Mandela Washington Fellowship team and the Department of State did their best to have an in-person fellowship for us. They even postponed our cohort to 2021. Still, COVID-19 didn't let us so ended up doing a virtual fellowship. We are the pandemic cohort hahaha! #thepandemiccohort I did Leadership in Business at the prestigious Drake University in IOWA with other amazing Young African Leaders across Africa. It was a life changing experience. #drakeuniversity In the end it was worth it. My life has a clearer path now. I'm empowered to make a positive impact in Sierra Leone. On Saturday 31st July 2021 we successfully held a Private Screening of our first content: Wath E'Behra (That Girl), a docudrama based on the true story of Haja Mrs. Zainab Hawa Bangura. She's a former activist, government Minister and politician. Madam Zainab Bangura is currently Under Secretary General and Director General of the United Nations Office in Nairobi. Before that she served as the second United Nations Special Representative on Sexual Violence in Conflict with the table of Under Secretary General on the United Nations. Mrs. Bangura's story speak against Child Marriage and supports the need for Girl Child Education. Child Marriage is a serious problem that limits many girls in Africa from reaching their fill potential. Our girls need to be educated. Our people need to know why. Wath E'Behra explains this. Meet Isata Kamara, one of my strong pillars. My sexy photographer! We've been working together since 2015/2016. I remember one beautiful day during my days at Star television, a young lady visited me. A total stranger to me; but one who knew me. The excitement on her face was conspicuous! Her eyes spoke love. She expressed her admiration of me in a brief conversation. Isata kept calling me frequently and expressing interest to work with me. She started off as just my Personal Assistant. She then quickly graduated to Production Assistant on The Phebe Swill Platform. Not long after, she was in charge of the whole production as my boss. Our abled no nonsense Production Manager. I met her parents; very warm and receptive people. They handed her over to me. If she wanted to go out, her dad would call me and check if I'm ok with it. Thanks to them for trusting me with their daughter. I can confidently say Isata is a professional, efficient, diligent, reliable young lady and a fast learner. Her level of responsibility gave me the room to travel and trust that she could handle business for me while I'm on vacation. She's never disappointed! Nick Asgill met Isata on my set and got captivated by her work ethics. He spoke to me to have her work with both of us. I agreed to put her on shared service for her own good - to learn more. I never received a complain about her. Enough is not enough. So I encouraged her to make sure she acquires tertiary education. She passed WASSCE. She's now at FBC to graduate soon. Oh my baby girl I'm proud of you. As a mentor, Isata is one of my major success stories in mentorship! I feel proud of the woman she has become. I love her dearly. Isata very recently opened her own photography studio - Ice Photography. She's now my photographer too. I'm not taking credit for the woman you've become. God did it all. And you played your part well too. I was only a channel God used to set you on the right footing. My Isata, I will celebrate you today and always. May God continue to elevate you.
