We are excited to announce that the National Giraffe Conservation Strategy and Action Plan for Uganda (2020-2030) was officially launched last week! This valuable document was many years in the making through the amazing collaboration between GCF and the Uganda Wildlife Authority and supported by many partners. This plan will guide all giraffe conservation actions in the country for the next 9 years, so rest assured that Uganda's Critically Endangered Nubian giraffe are in good hands! @ugwildlife #nubiangiraffe #northerngiraffe #endangeredspecies #criticallyendangered #endextinction #giraffeconservationfoundation #ugandawildlifeauthority #ugandawildlife #standtallforgiraffe #stickyourneckoutforgiraffe #giraffe #giraffes #uganda #teamworkmakesthedreamwork #wildlifewednesday

We just love sharing #SomeGoodNews and also when a well laid out plan works. In #OperationTwigaIII 14 critically endangered Nubian giraffe were moved to Kidepo Valley National Park in Uganda in a team effort by UWA and GCF to bolster the small existing population of then 36 giraffe. Our latest survey has now recorded 80 giraffe. With only 3000 Nubian giraffe remaining in the wild, Kidepo Valley NP is now home to their second-largest population and has developed into an important stronghold. What a fantastic conservation success story! @ugwildlife @naples_zoo @clevezoosociety @chesterzoo #northerngiraffe #nubiangiraffe #crtiticallyendangered #endangeredspecies #endextinction #conservationoptimism #giraffeconservationfoundation #positivenews #welovegoodnews #togetherwecansavegiraffe #standtallforgiraffe #giraffe #giraffes #kidepovalleynationalpark #ugandawildlife #africanwildlife #africansafari #conservationstories

Update from Niger: We are happy to report that the rare West African giraffe in their new home in Gadabedji Biosphere Reserve in Niger are doing well. These giraffe were moved here in an epic conservation translocation in 2018. Sadly, our Niger team continues to be impacted by instability and Covid-19 in the region, but this is still a true conservation success story! And there might just be some exciting baby news shortly, so stay tuned. @sahara_conservation_fund @savegiraffesnow @ivan.carter @sophielagirafe_officielle #westafricangiraffe #northerngiraffe #niger #operationsahelgiraffe #gadabedjibiosphere #giraffeconservationfoundation #giraffe #giraffe #saharaconservationfund #endangeredspecies #giraffeconservation #wildlifewednesday #africanwildlife #standtallforgiraffe

When giraffe are translocated to a new area, it is important to ensure long-term monitoring is in place. After our recent reintroduction to the //Huab Conservancy, an experienced team of rhino rangers will add giraffe to their tracking list. In addition to providing vital data to Save the Rhino Trust Namibia, the rangers are excited to work with GCF to keep these giraffe safe. Great news from Namibia: GCF and our partners recently moved 14 Angolan giraffe from a small private game farm and released them to roam wild and free in the vast open communal lands of northwest Namibia. T.G.I.F. - Thank Giraffe It’s Friday! Did you know that the coat pattern of every giraffe is unique? Similar to using fingerprints, we can identify individuals and accurately count a population. Working with partners and building their capacity allows us to have a greater impact on giraffe conservation. We recently worked with students from NUST - Namibia University of Science and Technology and UNAM - University of Namibia in the field to fit trackers on giraffe (and other wildlife) as part of our Africa-wide Twiga Tracker Initiative. Collaborating on conservation programmes, sharing expertise and helping train the next generation of conservationists is part of our ethos.
