Architect Chirag Panchal of Ignitus Architectural Studio takes us through the design of a newly constructed home, aptly titled "House of Nine Cubes". This residence is inspired by its arid location and celebrates locally available resources...having said that it is presented in a fresh narrative. You could say, this home is an excellent example of contemporary Indian vernacular architecture. Located in the busy suburbs of Ahmedabad it covers 5,000sqft of area and accommodates nine family members in its five bedrooms and lavish entertainment room. The whole building consists of nine cubes placed on top of each other to cater to the client's specific functional and luxury requirements. Each cube serves a different function, ranging from parking to living spaces, with a simple exterior material palette consisting of stone, wood, and exposed brick. The house's architecture is minimal and tailored to its surroundings' hot and dry climate, with the built structure strategically aligned to take advantage of natural light and wind flow. The clients' need for an open layout for the common areas of the house was a crucial factor in the design process. The spatial planning is largely open, with the drawing room opening up to the outside deck, and the living, dining, and kitchen areas blending into one huge linear space. The overall architecture is sustainable, energy-efficient, and environmentally friendly, with locally sourced materials used to minimize the carbon footprint. Thoughtful and evocative, this 1,800sqft home in Lower Parel, Mumbai, was skillfully executed for young couple Nishit Gupta, owner of fashion house Kalki, and his wife Saloni Saraf (@salonisaraf). Kavan Shah, an award-winning architect, whose most recent accolade is being a recipient at GoodHomes Awards 2023, is fearless when it comes to juxtapositioning Indian art with modern forms, and working with contrasting and subdued patinas that evoke a sense of nostalgia. For this project, the architect of the eponymous design firm, along with interior designer Disha Shah, the aim rested on redefining the concept of home as a sanctuary, with a minimalistic yet luxurious aesthetic. As a result, the design balances elevated elements with artisanal touches, resulting in a warm and understated ambiance. The space features a main master bedroom, a guest bedroom, and an open-plan living, dining, and kitchen area, seamlessly flowing together. Floor-to-ceiling windows offer stunning views of the cityscape, establishing a strong connection with the surroundings. The interior design emphasises tranquility, with off-white walls, dark walnut flooring, soft textiles, sisal rugs, and tropical plants creating a soothing atmosphere. The carefully curated furniture and decor include brands such as Jaipur Rugs, AKFD, Magnolia, WestElm, Cotton & Satins, White Teak, and Hatsu. The artwork displayed includes paintings by Anila Govindappa ("Cake" painting against the dining area) and Richa Kashelkar. The space embraces imperfections, with details like peeling plaster and raw concrete adding character. The design reflects Kavan's vision while incorporating high-quality materials such as Marquino and Michelangelo marble and walnut wood flooring.
