Autumn is very much here, and as the leaves turn colors, so too do the compositions of Alexei Jawlensky (1864–1941). Although the artist’s “Variations” series is grounded in the landscape genre, Jawlensky achieved considerable variety within the restricted theme. Some were inspired by specific seasons, and he adroitly shifted his palette to reflect the moods evoked by different times of the year. For example, the orange, yellow and red tones found in “Variation: Autumn” (1917), shown here, are emblematic of the season. If you were to paint a picture of your friends, what would it look like? – One of the most talented, yet often overlooked, artists affiliated with the Munich-based Blaue Reiter (Blue Rider) group is Gabriele Münter. The Blaue Reiter’s founders included her dear friends, the Russian-born Alexei Jawlensky and Marianne von Werefkin. Yesterday we shared a view of the drawing room in Ferdinand Berthe Hodler’s Geneva apartment. It is hard to miss the stunning artwork that filled the space, including this painting by the artist. This work was presented at the Neue Galerie in 2012 as part of an exhibition on the Swiss painter. As described in the Brooklyn Rail, “Hodler’s canvases breathe with a sort of palpable animism saved for only the most gifted artists and shamans....Unity underlies variation in nature; so repetition of similar forms, therefore, reinforce the all-over unity of a painting.” – Ferdinand Hodler (1853-1918), “View to Infinity,” 1916, oil on canvas. What could be nicer than a Sunday at home? The furnishings for Ferdinand Hodler’s Geneva apartment belong to a long tradition of interior designs that Josef Hoffmann realized for fellow artists. In 1912, at the age of fifty-nine, Hodler had reached the height of his artistic recognition and the financial success that went along with it. Around this time, he asked Hoffmann to furnish an apartment for him and his wife and daughter, Berthe Jacques and Paulette. #WorldMigratoryBirdDay is a campaign to conserve migratory birds and this year’s theme is “Birds Connect Our World.” To celebrate the occasion, we share this beautiful arrangement of multicolored birds by Franz Marc.
