Reposted from @stefanieannflippin Back in April, I spent a great deal of time in the lab with the amazing @csipacific team. I was coming off of nine weeks away from running to heal my body & mind. Heading into testing, I’d only done strides & one workout (90 second hill repeats). I cross trained, but minimally. The focus was purely on healing, fueling, strengthening & having no pain — not about maintaining cardiovascular fitness. I pulled a Dwight Schrute while I was hooked up on the treadmill, trying to will my lactate to stay below that 4mmol mark for as long as possible through concentration 😅 My numbers came back about where I expected them to with that much time away. My 100 mile effort was solid & efficient. My lactate threshold needed a lot of sharpening. I made the tough decision in the following months to listen to my body but also follow the science that’s specific to me & my physiology. I love running far. But I really only love doing so with the engine & fitness to make running far enjoyable & efficient. I’ve been putting in the work that’s maybe not what most ultrarunners like or often focus on, & made race decisions that aren’t necessarily flashy, but they’re what I personally needed to feel confident in my fitness & biomechanics. I thought my days of shaving time off of the road 10k were over, but I shocked myself this past weekend with an altitude PR, eerily executing exactly what I manifested myself doing the night prior, & feeling like a completely different runner than I was a year ago…or even ever. I’m super proud of fighting to significantly lower that lactate threshold I tested at in April, but even more proud of my calmness on a start line that was frankly uncomfortable. I share all this because I struggled for a long time with comparison & feeling like I needed to do all the things like everyone else. I finished this race with a huge smile & pride for myself not just because of the performance, but because I stayed true to myself & my path back to fitness. You are you, & that’s your superpower. A reminder for you & me ❤️ In the words of someone at the complete opposite end of the sport as me: I’m not back. I’m better. So excited
