We save 300 cats per year with our Barn Cat Program. While this population of cats may not like living indoors or interacting with humans, they still have the right to live! So, we connect them with breweries, barns, warehouses and other places where they will be well fed and cared for–but still enjoy the independence they crave. Because of this, he isn’t able to live outdoors like other barn cats. It wasn’t Edith’s fault that the under-resourced shelter she landed in was facing space constraints, but it is what led her to the top of their euthanasia list twice.  After being in the shelter’s care for a month and surviving her daunting fate, it was with a stroke of luck that Edith was selected to go into foster care. Unfortunately, her foster family couldn’t keep her through adoption, and her return to the shelter meant she was at high-risk for euthanasia once again. Edith’s emaciated and frightened appearance in the shelter’s plea request caught the eye of an organization in Chicago and they agreed to take her in–but only if she could find transportation. Winter storm Uri gave birth to APA!’s Transport Program in 2021 and has since saved thousands of lives by connecting under-resourced Texas shelters with out-of-state rescue organizations. APA! provides the resources, vet time, health certificates, vaccinations, and coordination required to move these shelter pets out of Texas–some traveling by van, others by plane.  Thanks to this lifesaving program, Edith no longer had to rely on luck. With a shelter awaiting her in Chicago, our transport team quickly jumped into action to get Edith on the next flight out. And just shortly after arriving, Edith was adopted! Two-year-old Interpawl is facing multiple obstacles–he’s FeLV+, incontinent, and currently being treated for ringworm and FIP. But thanks to our Foster Program, shelter stress is one less problem he’ll have to tackle.  When Interpawl was staying at the shelter, he needed medication to keep his ailments at bay, was difficult to express, and suffered from an uneasy stomach. But when Interpawl found his way into a peaceful foster home, he became a new cat. Adjusting to the calmer space, Interpawl no longer suffered from an upset tummy, was easy to express, and didn’t even need medication! Teeny 1-month-old Lemongrab was found as a stray covered in fleas and suffering from a fractured palate. At other shelters without the necessary resources to provide intensive care, kittens like her may face euthanasia in such circumstances.  Luckily, thanks to the efforts of our first-of-its-kind Neonatal Kitten Nursery, Lemongrab is being tube-fed to make sure she gets the nutrients she needs to recover and grow strong.  By feeding, treating, and providing shelter to kittens that would have otherwise been euthanized, the Neonatal Kitten Nursery fills the gap in the shelter community that is necessary to save the lives of thousands of kittens each year. When Rosa found a pregnant dog and its male companion in the Onion Creek area of Austin, she jumped into action. She reported them as found, but didn’t receive follow up assistance. As an individual, Rosa has rescued dogs for a number of years and knew the mama dog needed a calm environment to have her babies.  She decided to foster them and soon after the mama gave birth to 8 squirmy pups, she became pregnant AGAIN. This litter would bring the total number of puppies and adult dogs in Rosa’s care to 18! Rosa needed help. After taking to Next Door and Austin Lost and Found Pets, all signs for help pointed to APA!'s PASS (Positive Alternatives to Shelter Surrender) Program.   Rosa was connected with Lucy, our PASS Program Manager, who worked fast to hatch a plan. Rosa would continue to foster all 18 dogs; mama and 7 babies would be officially fostered through APA! and Rosa would work to rehome the remaining 10 using her own efforts paired with resources offered by our PASS team. The PASS program was established in 2008 to help keep pets like this cute bunch out of the shelter system, though it’s lifesaving skyrocketed in 2020 when the pandemic changed life as we knew it in so many ways. Wile E. Coyote came to APA! back in March severely malnourished and weak with pressure sores all over his body. A pup like Wile should have weighed around 75 pounds; he arrived weighing only 33 pounds.  About a week after his arrival, Wile was welcomed into a loving foster home where he began to transform before our eyes. Jackob has been through a lot in his three years of life. Once a happy pup living in a loving home, his world was turned upside down when his elderly owner could no longer care for him.  Jackob was promptly rehomed and while he got along great with his new family, they couldn’t dedicate time to his newly developed quirks brought upon by his recent lifestyle change. Just a couple months after their birth, Buster, Boo, Butch, Roxie, Cinder, and Killer’s mother was euthanized after discovering she was FeLV+. We’re live in our Parvo Puppy ICU with Parvo ICU Manager, Fathom, to give you a look at this innovative program and meet the very puppies your dollars support - with this hour only giving your dollars 3X the impact!  APA! began saving puppies with parvovirus in 2008. BattleScar GalactiCat, a tiny two-month-old-kitten, came to APA! in critical condition–he was covered in maggots, with a severe degloving injury to his hind legs, and a neck fracture. BattleScar is stable now, and while we’re able to save one leg,  he’ll ultimately need an amputation of his right hind leg.  This sweet kitten is currently on the road to recovery–in addition to the surgery he’ll need, he’s also receiving daily bandage changes to promote healing and medication for pain, but we can only give pets like him a second chance at life with your help.  A critical care unit like this is rare for animal shelters. APA!’s Medical Triage and Wellness Clinic operates at least 70 hours a week–not including on-call staff. We’re live at Maddie’s® Cat Adoption Center: Treatment and Care for Ringworm Positive Cats with volunteers Joanna and Wassa to watch ringworm positive kitties get their weekly lime sulfur dip treatment! Although ringworm is a simple fungus that is non-fatal and can be easily treated, it is a death sentence in many under-resourced shelters across the country.  Here at APA!, we believe that cats with ringworm are highly adoptable pets and that their lives matter! So in 2010, we began rescuing ringworm positive cats at risk of euthanasia, treating their skin, and adopting them into loving homes.  Six and a half weeks of ringworm treatment like you see here costs $1.82.
