A few weeks ago, I shared on my Instagram stories that when we moved countries (from Australia to NZ) I really struggled not having any kind of friendship group or support. We didn’t know anyone when we moved here, it was just my partner and I for a full year together (luckily our love languages are quality time 😂) while we were travelling NZ, navigating lockdowns and figuring out our next steps. Finding new friends, especially as an adult and in a different country or state is a bit like dating - and if you’re an introvert like me, you have to push yourself to meet new people and put yourself out there. After I shared my struggles and how I manifested / found the most loving, supportive and uplifting group of friends I received tons of DM’s from people saying that they related and wished they had friends like this, but didn’t know what to do and are still searching. Ever since, I’ve been thinking of ways I could potentially help you find your people. And then I saw @drcourtneykahla post the other day (perfect timing) inviting people to connect through IG to find new friendships and build community and I wanted to share this idea. When did you last read your body wash ingredient label? You might be surprised to learn that many contain a bunch of potentially harmful substances that can wreak havoc on both your health and the environment. Our skin, being our largest organ, is profoundly impacted by what we slather on it, even when it’s washed off! Luckily, many brands are now committed to formulating their products with safe, non-toxic ingredients, opting to use natural, organic ingredients that are often fragrance-free and gentle on your body and our planet. Here are a few nasties we recommend avoiding: 🫧 FRAGRANCES Are a catch-all for 1,000’s of undisclosed chemicals that include phthalates and other synthetics that can cause skin irritation, allergies, skin reactions and asthma. Research suggests they’re in over 72% of personal care products despite being linked to birth defects and infertility. Look out for the words ‘fragrance or parfum’ to avoid them. 🫧 NITROSAMINES Are petroleum-derived ingredients like DEA (diethanolamine), TEA (triethanolamine) or MEA (monoethanolamine). These chemicals create a lather + adjust pH. As they readily absorb into our skin, they can cause hormone disruption, and skin, lung and eye irritation. They also react with other chemicals to produce nitrosodiethanolamine (NDEA), which is linked to various cancers. 🫧 PARABENS Are synthetic preservatives to extend the shelf life of body wash + prevent bacteria and mould growth. They can disrupt hormones and have been linked to breast cancer. 🫧 TRICLOSAN Is used as an antibacterial agent and can be found in toothpaste, soaps and hand washes. It is known to have hormone-disrupting properties. 🫧 SODIUM LAURYL SULFATE (SLS) + SODIUM LAURETH SULFATE (SLES) Are foaming agents that create a lather. They strip the skin of its natural oils and cause irritation or dryness and studies suggest they may be carcinogenic. Reading your product ingredient list is the easiest way to avoid these toxic chemicals. @a.glimpse.of.amelia and I have put together simple swaps for both adult + baby body wash to help you. I know how convenient store-bought crackers are - especially if you’re not much of a baker or don’t always have the time to make homemade crackers. They’re also great as an on-the-go snack for little ones. But it can be hard to find store-bought crackers without all the cheap filler ingredients like corn flour, starches, vegetable oil and a whole bunch of additives! Unfortunately, these additives can cause a wide range of health issues. For example, did you know that flavour enhancers can cause allergic reactions, behavioural problems, headaches, heart palpitations and even skin issues like rashes? Maltodextrin is another additive that can cause various symptoms, including; dizziness, headaches, hives, irritability, nausea, and pins and needles. People with MSG sensitivity are particularly susceptible! These are only two additives - processed foods can contain MULTIPLE additives, which could cause many adverse health effects. If you’d like to start reducing the number of additives you / your family consume, I recommend always reading the ingredients so you can look out for and avoid these additives. I’d also recommend opting for plain crackers over pre-seasoned ones. The plain ones will have significantly fewer additives and inflammatory ingredients. If you miss the "added flavour" on the crackers, serve them with a yummy dip, fresh avocado with salt + pepper, or some good quality cheese. There’s no harm in keeping it simple.⁣⁣ You can check out a bunch of store-bought options if you swipe right. You can see how I’ve categorised them below to help you decide which options are best for you! 💥AVOID⁣⁣ These crackers contain multiple additives such as; maltodextrin, preservatives, flavour enhancers, vegetable oil, antioxidants, raising agents etc. 💛 BETTER⁣⁣ These crackers still contain vegetable oil (which is not ideal), but all options (except one) are additive-free. 🙌 BEST⁣⁣ These options are completely additive + vegetable oil free. I know corn chips are a FAVOURITE snack and I understand why. They’re perfect with guacamole, salsa or other tasty dips! But many of them can also contain a bunch of nasty ingredients that I recommend steering clear of. First up, we have FLAVOURS. I recommend avoiding flavours, natural or not. IP protections mean ingredients (sometimes up to 100!) do not need to be disclosed. This makes it impossible to monitor what we’re ingesting or feeding our kids. YEAST EXTRACT has a high concentration of glutamate, which excites brain + nerve cells, causing hyperactivity. It can also cause abdominal discomfort, mood changes, nausea, migraines etc. ⁣ MALTODEXTRIN⁣ is artificially produced from GMO corn or wheat contaminated with gut-destroying glyphosate residue. It suppresses the good probiotics in our gut, and can cause cramping, bloating, weight gain and high blood sugar. It also has NO nutritional value. ⁣ VEGETABLE OILS⁣ - these are tough to avoid altogether when it comes to corn chips. A gentle reminder, they’re a freak of nature. The process of making vege oils means they’re extremely inflammatory to the body.⁣⁣ If you’d like to learn more, see my Insta feed + my blog on vegetable oils & why I recommend avoiding or limiting them as much as you possibly can. My top tip? Choose the plain corn chips instead of the seasoned ones. They’ll have significantly fewer additives and inflammatory ingredients. Sadly, I couldn’t find any vegetable oil-free corn chip options, only the tortilla chips on the last slide. So here’s my go-to easy recipe if you’d like to try making your own! All you need is corn tortillas + coconut oil (lard, tallow or even ghee) + salt. 1. Cut the corn tortilla into eight wedges. 2. Heat your fat of choice in a large frying pan over medium-medium high heat. 3. Place some of the tortilla wedges in the pan (make sure they don’t overlap). 4. Fry until golden brown / crispy. I usually turn them about 3-4x each. 5. Remove and place on a paper towel lined plate and sprinkle with salt. 6. Repeat until they’re all done. Serve with your favourite salsa, or dipping sauces 🥑
